Topic: Am I asking too much of SME?

I have been using SME Server for a few months now, and am loving it.

I got my hands on a newer second-hand computer to use as my server so i will be starting from scratch setting up a new server.

My question is, am I trying to do too much with my SME Server?  My current functions as a;

- File server (less than 100gig storage)
- Private+Public Webserver (low bandwidth for public, mainly a private testing server)
- Asterisk PBX Server (no more than 2 concurrent calls)
- Network duties (dhcp etc) (less than 10 clients)
- Mail, not really used.
- PPPOE

My new one will do all the above, plus it may also do:

- antivirus
- spam filtering
- hylafax

Is all this too much to ask of an SME box?


Should i seperate my servers to have:

- Gateway Server
- Application Server
- File Server


Any advantages to this?  Or would it just make things less efficient and secure?

There is no reason why a reasonably sized SME should not provide all of your needs.

I run all of the services above on a single SME server including some development work.  Just get enough ram to make it worht your while.

Here too, except fax, pbx but more mail, antivirus, printservices. 128 MB Ram on PIII 1000, notorioulsy few RAM, but good uptimes and less than 3% load.

The only thing i'm worrying is: i should really really outsource the firewall to a seperate firewall-only machine. The more services running onto the same box, the more risky it gets. For home use seperating services is, by all means, oversized. So go.

Some people reported problems with antivirus then there is no enough RAM. Make sure that you install 256-512 MB RAM.

At the SME command line type:  top

This will show your live server resources.  Control-C to exit back to the command line.

Make sure your running on the recommended hardware for SME in your environment.  I agree, 256 meg. RAM as a min.

The only issue I see is that if your system does go down, then a fair bit of your office functionality is also down.  It doesn't hurt, if your have the equipment, to spread services around. The second server could also be used for redundency, whatever server goes down, have the other ready to take over the duties of it.
