Topic: How many people use the mailserver?

Just curious to know how many people in here actually use the mail functions of SME?

I personally do not.  Since my real sites are run on shared hosting servers.

And unless you have a static IP and a fast connection, i see no reason why the mail function would be of any use?

Please enlighten me.

I'm on dialup so only use it now and then.
My main use is to register (get activation codes for) software with companies that I dont trust with the main email.
I have a dynamic dns address so I just dream up a address like spam-aug-04-company@mydnsaddress.moc (fake)
the company is replaced with the name of the company I'm registering with

when the spam gets sent (and I'm online) I know who sent it, if I'm not online I don't get bothered.

Well I do have a static IP and DSL connection but the use would be
mail distribution for multiple users, in your case I think using fetchmail to receive mail from ISP.

Are additional benefits though my ISP uses 2 of the 3 above anyway if I was using mail through them.

Also unlimited email size to and from server - my isp would limit me to 5 meg files. Of course the receiver must be set up to accept such large emails (in my case a branch office) We transfer graphics files 30 and more megs in size.
FTP would be an option but then you need an email to say its been sent and to look for it etc. As email attachment it is automatic. For customers I have a webpage that sends unlimited size files to the email. (search for "soupermail" on this site) in In this way I get around my customers limitations for sending large emails due to their ISP.

I was using Mercury32. It as awkward to set up through a Linux box and I find the SME server just as efficient and more so as there is built in antivirus via ClamAV.

I am just about to set up a Server for my Brother and will be using SME server and all the defaults.

At home, the mail server is not used.

At work, SME handles the e-mail for 240 users.
(There are 2 boxes running SME, one is e-mail (PIII, 1G), the other does web proxying (PIII, 800Mhz).)

I don't yet use email on an SME server, but I'm in the process of giving it a try.  I'm relatively new to linux, and brand new to the SME server.  Hopefully I can muddle my way through things until I get familiar with it.  For the moment it looks like it is configured yet I cant send or receive email.  Obviously I missed something simple somewhere.

I currently have close to 15 SME servers scattered around the continental US - I use mail on almost all of them.

My end goal is to replace my aging Cobalt Qubes (a GREAT product) with the aged SME distro running on identical hardware.

I have a static IP and ADSL connection. I use SME as my primary mail server on an old IBM PCserver330 266 Mhz and 128 MB RAM. I use it at my primary mailserver and I am hosting 10 domains as virtual domains for friends and family members and they also use the mail server. It is configured with Clam antivirus and Spam Assassin, and we al think it is functioning well. If SME hadn’t the mail server my interest in it would be limited.

Why static IP, I have used dynamic IP in nearly two years and it has only glitched once and that was an human error (I screwed up)

There is some companies using reverse dns where there can be problems to deliver emails to but...

And I use it at several small companies (~ 5) where SME is an excelent Windows server killer.

I used to brag about not having to mess with my e-mail server, except deleting virus mail, for the past 2 years.  Today, however, I am having to recreate my mail server from scratch and having a heck of a time doing it.  I do like it otherwise.
This is how I am going to fix it!

Dynamic IP adresses can behave different. Some ISP change the adress every day, some other change only each 60 days or nomething like that (When your server is logged on all the time.)

I such a "slow dynamic" IP. I have written a small script that update the dynamic adress ip every hour. This have now worked without a problem for years.

I think it is not a big problem, but there exist a very few mailservers that refuse to send post to a dynamic ip. (Well known web mail like Hotmail and Yahoo is not a problem.)

To be on the safe side conserning this problem, I set up an acount with a fixed ip on a web hotel. Then I use the web hotel mail adress and my web hotel IP as contact info. Hven the mail reach the web hotell it is all redirected to the SME server with the dynamic IP.

So, today I can send the mail directely to my SME server or via the redirection via the web hotel.

Why then run a mail server when I already have a web hotel acount ??

Well, I use the Horde web mail on the SME, and I think it is a good idea to have a mail box of the size of some Gigabytes.

I have written a small script that update the dynamic adress ip every hour. This have now worked without a problem for years.

Here is a script that check's if the IP has been updated. The script only takes action if the external IP has changed. The script uses ddclient as the DynDNS updater.

Well, I use the Horde web mail on the SME, and I think it is a good idea to have a mail box of the size of some Gigabytes.

I use the secure email contribution to the email server to secure the email transport where it is needed instead of VPN. There is few Email providers that offers this feature around here!
