Telstra Bigpond Direct permanent modem connection (Australia

Hello,

I'm trialling E-Smith 4.1.2 on a Bigpond Direct permanent modem service. The e-smith server is hosting a domain and email. It has 2 ethernet cards - 1 internal and the other is external (hosting the www & mail). Also it has a ppp interface for the gateway.

Because the Dialup mode assumes only 1 ethernet card I've chosen to use Dedicated mode to get the other card initialised. then edited actions/conf.startup to hardcode the diald status to "enable".

Dialup works fine until a few hours of connection when E-Smith updates my external ethernet card with the ppp ip address... its too smart! I checked the logs and its the /etc/e-smith/events/ip-change/S15Set-External-ip that is updating it.

My question is how do I get e-smith not to change my external ethernet card (eth1) ip. I've tried editing the actions/Set-external-ip script but it breaks my dialup script and i don't connect successfully. Specifically I changed the 'ExternalIP' variable to the GatewayIP.

Thanks for your time,

Overall I really like E-Smith due to the easy administration via web browser.

Cheers,

Adrian

I am running e-smith 4.1.1 on a Bigpond Direct Permanent Modem Connection. Some modifications were required to get it to connect, but once connected, I have had no further problems. I don't understand why you have 2 ethernet cards installed, if you are using a modem connection. I have only 1 NIC, and host multiple domains and mail servers. You can email me if you wish to get further information.
