Topic: unable to access SME 6.0.1

I did a fresh install of sme 6.0.1 on a box that previously ran slack 10. In Slack, the network worked fine. After I installed sme, I can't reach any of the other boxes (another slack 10 and an winxp), bu they can see each other. I tried swapping cables, nic's, ip's, but still no luck.

The ip's are all 192.168.1.*, netmasks 255.255.255.0, nut using dhcp.

Any ideas?

I think more info is needed on this.  What mode are you running on the server?  (Server-only, Server/Gateway)  On the SME box, what is the output of ifconfig -a?  Can the SME server ping your default GW?

I tried it as server only, and as server/gateway. I can't ping in or out. I'm not on the box at the moment, but the ifconfig doesn't show anything abnormal.

Don't know if there is much of anything I can do to help.  I was wanting to know if ifconfig really showed an IP address or not.  In some of the test installs I have done in the past, I have had to change nic cards sometimes because they wouldn't work on SME.  If your IP's are all on the same subnet, you should be able to ping your devices at will.  If not, I'd watch when SME is coming up and see if there are any errors on the console when it tries to start the network portion.

ifconfig shows the real ip's.
both the nic's I tried use tulip drivers, which worked in slack 9, slack 10, redhat 9.
I checked iptables, no chains, except the defaults, all with policy accept.
Any other ideas?

I know that older versions of sme had issues if you used 2 identical nic's or 2 nics that use the drivers, so try changing one into something different and see how you go.

Kewl, it works.
I took out the one network card, and now it's working fine. Any software workarounds, or should I get another nic?

As far as i know it was an old problem with the server, I thought it would have been resolved with the later one's, anyway just install a different NIC one that uses different drivers and you should be ready to go.

You can use virtually ANY run of the mill NIC. I had similar problem with 2 NICS both using RTL8139 chipset!. Bought a $5 NE2000 PCI Card - worked fine right away!
