Is it possible to modify the template fragments ?
« on: September 03, 2004, 11:12:52 PM »
I know that the "right way" of making modification to configuration files is to make a copy of the template and then make the modifications to the copy and not the orginal.

I thin the procedure about making such modifications is rather difficult.

I know that according to "the text" you should not modify the orginal templates, but to make things a little bit more easy - from a technical point of view - is it possible to make the modifications on the orginal template fragments and the let this lead to the modifications of the "standard linux configuration files".

The idea was just to jump over one step, i stead of making a copy one certain place an make the mod here, just to make the mod on the orginal template fragment instead. (Think it is rather difficult first to locate the right fragment and then to copy this over to the right "template mirror".

Courious if anybody knows more about this.

Best reg Arne.

I think that if you are able to do mods on the template, it should be the least problem for you to locate and copy it to templates-custom......!!!!!

Two good reasons to do so is:

1. You don't destroy anything if you mess up, you just delete the modyfied template and expand it. (And restart whatever service you worked on)

2. When you do a system backup from the server manager, you will get a backup from your modyfied template.

So why not just do it the "right" way :-)

Thanks for your comment !

I might possibly not have the right amounth of training .. I think this operation of making a copy of the fragments is difficult, but I will look into it again.

I have to admint - I did not think about the backup function for the template fragments - this was a rather important thing to remember. Thanks a lot  ;-)

Training is what you get doing all this stuff... :hammer:

But i followed your reference link to see what it was, and i now understand why you think it's hard. That's doing it with the command line... Have you tried typing "mc" and hit enter? Do it and you will be happy i think, especially if you are familiar with Norton Commander from old DOS times...
