Registering SME with AD DNS
« on: September 22, 2004, 08:55:41 PM »
Good Afternoon,

Let me preface this post with this statement. I do not have access or the rights to manually input a DNS record in the DNS servers in our school nor will the Network Administrators do it manually.

With that said, the DNS server is a Win2k AD DNS server that will allow secure dynamic updates. My SME 6.x server is running in server-only mode which requires me to set a static ip address instead of getting one via DHCP (still would like to figure out how to do it via DHCP.) I need to update and/or register my SME box on the DNS server via a secure update. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm running whatever Samba comes with the 6.x custom iso. I believe it is 2.x.x.

Wally,

Are your MS admins worthless?  Setting a static forward & reverse record in Active Directory takes less than a minute.  I am a network administrator...it is our job to support the network and it's users.  I hope they gave you a legitimate sounding reason.  I don't believe Samba is able to register with AD DNS.

You sound like you know what your wanting to do.  If your net admins are as dumb as they are lazy, you can take control of any MS Domain by simply booting any AD server with a linux boot CD and some instructions available online.  Of course you could get into trouble if caught.

Good Evening,

It has nothing to do with the network admins but rather school policy. I know exactly what to do if I have physical access to the server with the appropriate rights. I was just curious if it would register with an AD DNS.

What a close minded policy....sounds like something Bill Gates would create.  Only allowing secure AD DNS updates means your 100% Microsoft.  I am sure they have their reasons....sorry to sound so negative in my last posting.  I just can't stand bad/ignorant policy and/or administrators.
