DHCP Reservations? SME 6.x Build
« on: September 24, 2004, 05:04:23 AM »
Hi folks...  been a long time since I've posted anything in here.  Summer is more or less history, server has been running well (hardly ever need to do anything with it.. ;) ) and now that I'm not outdoors as much - I find that I'm developing some "urges" to play on my computers again.  So...

I did a quick search of these boards re: the subject of this post - DHCP reservations.  Anyone know if it can be done on SME?  I know for a fact that on an NT box, and most *nix'es I hafta believe.  It is usually just a matter of telling the dhcp server to hand out ~this~ address when MAC address AA-BB-CC-DD-EE-FF requests a lease.  I looked around and found a link to this french contrib --> http://www.developit.fr/ I found that link as a result of this link --> http://no.longer.valid/mylinks/viewcat.php?cid=83 -- approx 3rd or so contrib displayed.

A) I can't speak or read French
B) Any other non-French speaking/reading users in here tried this contrib or had nay luck with it?  Can it do what I'm looking for... maybe??  ;)

I DID find (kick ass too!!) "Active Service", the DHCP to DNS synchroniser - Ensures the DNS service reflects the names and IPs allocated by DHCP, as well as all statically allocated local IPs (eliminates the "pc-00001" problem) ... at the same 2nd link (contribs.org) and it works as advertised - nice!  ;)

Now...  what about the dhcp reservations??  Anyone?  Ideas?  (( I know, I know... I could just assign a static address to the workstation(s) in question... but then I'd have to label the machines and/or remember what the addresses are for them when I wack 'em and re-build - which tends to happen frequently as I muck with diff OS's and stuff... ))  I'd prefer to just set up the reservation and know that I'll always get "this address" on this or that machine.  Helps with setting up port fwds too at the router...

Thanks all!  ;)

.. put your required entries into the Hostnames panel - if you add the MAC address then it tells DHCP to assign the same IP to that MAC every time, just what you want eh!

Enjoy

Hey Rigger...

Some of those are kinda interesting, and definely enlightening - didn't know that you could do some of what those guys were discussing (deny unknown hosts for example).  We have actually been looking for something like that @work - but we're also not about to setup 300+ fixed addresses and/or keying in 300+ mac addreses either!  For a small'ish home based network - not bad though...  good stuff to know.

Thanks.   :pint:
