Fresh install 6.01 - Questions re: updates / patches reqd?
« on: September 28, 2004, 04:55:30 AM »
I have had a 6.x box running since it first came out before the project became contribs.org - when it was still Mitels baby.  Looking at replacing existing machine with brand new build on another machine (after test / cfg, move data, etc... then retire old machine and re-use for something else)  I'm downloading the current .iso now for burn to cd.

Post install - am I going to have to apply any req'd security fixes / patches / updates, etc?

I'm kind of looking at the script that Greg Swallow has written up - looks nice, and could be handy.  Greg - if you're seeing this - are these updates required or toys.  Some look like they might be req'd (ssh for instance... )  I do have additional toys that I will want to install after basic build - but I'll get to those later (gallery being the main one).

TIA people...

JD,

don't forget install the following rpm
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/smeserver/updates/6.0.1/RPMS/initscripts-6.67-1es26.i386.rpm

This is the only rpm in the update directory on contribs.

Regarding security updates, after you have your server configured the way you intend to use it...eg ftp on? ssh on? webmail on? I'd check out http://www.securityspace.com and run a free 'standard audit' on your server.

Regarding the script I put together as Howard says there is only 1 official update rpm.  You will have to decide for yourself if anything else is necessary.

If you haven't made any changes to your rc.local file, that update won't make any significant difference to your system. It's certainly not a security update.
