I found a file named this on one of the ftps dated 12-22-99.  Is this the final release of 4.0?

I downloaded it, burned the CD and installed it. It runs beautifully. Telnet into the server shows the following

Red Hat Linux release 6.1 (Cartman)
Kernel 2.2.12-20smp on an i686

So I suppose that is the latest version, but I can't figure out where to read the version number.

I hope this is helpful.

Hello,

We're delighted to hear the CD is working well for you! One warning though - this is a pre-alpha of version 4.0, so many of the features do not actually work yet. Any features that were in e-smith 3.1 should work in 4.0, but virtual domains, additional local networks, and a few other features aren't implemented yet.

If you have any feedback about the product, please let us know!

Best regards,
- Joe Morrison

It works great for me too!
One question though: The "restore utility" doesn't work with a backup made from an earlier version of E-Smith. Is this something that would be implemented in the official release of version 4.0, or is there any other nice method to transfer a whole site built on E-Smith 3.0 or 3.1 into the new environment of 4.0????????

Keep the good work up! When can we expect the release of 4.0?

Can you write more about exactly what fails? There are several design decisions in 4.0 to make sure that 3.0/3.1 backups can be restored, so we're very interested to find out in which cases it doesn't work yet.

Thanks!! We're hoping to release by end of January.

Wow... this is "pre-alpha" ??

Works really well, I actually installed it instead of 3.1

One problem I have noticed is with ATALKD.

From the moment the ATALKD service starts my ethernet lan freezes. I notice on the resource utilization meter that something is constantly "chattering"(?)

I ran a sniffer and found that the e-smith server is constantly sending Appletalk broadcasts. My NT4 and my Win98 pc freak out completely :) and will not comunicate across the LAN.

If I go to the e-smith server, remove ATALKD from the start up services and reboot, everything is fine.

Even my BeOS machine loves this E-smith box... :-D

It'd also be preferable that we keep this bulletin board for the
released version of E-smith.

There is a developer mailing list which you can join by sending mail to devinfo-subscribe@e-smith.net - we'd love to get your feedback and ideas there....

Cheers

I can assure you that I've tried to restore from 3.0 to 4.0, again and again and again...
For some reason, I haven't been able to get that failure message again, so the case can be regarded as "dismissed"...............

The only hint I can deliver is that the original backup file was made on a client using MS Internet Explorer 3.x (I remember that the file wasn't named x.bak for some reason, and that the restore process was made from another client using Staroffice 5.1. That's when the restore didn't succeeded.

Well, case dismissed, and I'll stick to the newsgroup for further questions and comments!!!!!!!!!

Hi!

Everything works like a dream as the previous revisions, but dial up doesen´t works. The server connect and disconnect emediately. It seems to be something wrong with the script files. However, this is an alpha release. I have not analysed the files yet. I just wanted to notify you that there is a problem with the chat script.
