Replacement of the mailing lists by newsgroups

Sorry in advance for my bad english.

I've just read the devinfo ML and the discussion about forums vs ML.
For years, the francophone community uses 4 newsgroups (NNTP protocol) to communicate :
* alt.e-smith.fr (more than 17000 messages !)
* alt.e-smith.dev.fr
* alt.e-smith.documentation.fr
* alt.e-smith.hardware.fr

It has many and really interresting features :
* works as mail (hi, Charly ;-) )
* structure of discussions by threads
* keeps messages without time restriction if the NNTP server is configured to do so
* many NNTP servers can be used to access the same newsgroups
* there are many clients on all OSs and some web interfaces like this one.

I think you should really think of this possibility : here, we would be many more to read (and participate to) the lists if they were accessible by this way.
But, maybe we are the "french exception"... :-D

In the case where you wouldn't be interrested in this possibility, would it be possible to subscribe the lists at Gmane, so that they could be accessible with NNTP clients ?

I would favor ng's over mailing lists and forums.

Hi,

Would any of you be willing to write up a procedure for your ideas? Possibly with pro's and Con's keep/not keep and why or combine so people can choose.

You know where to find me ;-)

Cheers,

RequestedDeletion,

I just checked Gmane.org (which Grand-Pa described above) and found, that the old e-smith-developer list (until 01/2004) is already there. When you open http://news.gmane.org/gmane.network.e-smith.devel/ you can see the postings in the mailinglist via web interface (also with an blog like interface) and when using nntp:// you can use any news reader.

I can see no disadvantages using this service, so I would suggest, that you (!) connect the exisiting mailing lists with a new category at gmane (perhaps gmane.network.sme.) so that we could use it (beside the existing mailing list and web interface) with a new web interface and the nntp interface.
