Hi fellow SME',

I'm very unexperienced but I'm certainly proud to have my server with SME 5.6 running now with some nice personal things.

Until yesterday I thought that my weekly backup (growing and growing) was a safe way of recovering my server or another machine in case of some technical issue or whatever.
Just for fun, I have tried to read one of my archive.tgz-files with WinRAR and I noticed that not all ibays and none of my users were backed up.

WHAT WENT WRONG?

As you can imagine, I really panicked.

Who knows this problem?
- where are the settings to change this
- which folders and permissions are usually backed up
- what is the a maximum of data that is able to back up
- what tools you are using
- did you ever try to restore or verify the data and what did you found out

Who want to help me out?

Looking forward to your replies.

Thanks

Robol,

I'm assuming that you're using the backup to desktop function through the server-manager.

When you view an archive through winrar the file structure follows the same structure as the server.  therefore the users directory will be found in
\home\e-smith\files\users
the ibays will be found in
\home\e-smith\files\ibays

How large are you back archive's?
If you backup is above 2GB then your answer may be to install backup2ws contrib.

Thanks for the fast reply.

Well that might be the problem.
My data is larger then 2Gb.

That's why not all data is in the file.

I will try to install backup2ws...

Let you know!

:-o

I'm running Backup2WS for some weeks now and with success, but I really got suprised this morning the backup was completed in not even one minute.
My logfile cleared out the reason:
It seems that the included RAR tool is an Evaluation copy. "Please Register"....

Is there somebody who recognize this issue and knows where to register and how to continue? Please help.

Thanks

Even when using backup2ws you still need to limit the size of the backup files to under 2Gb due to limitatiosn with RAR, smb etc which have been well discussed on these forums, search !
You do this by splitting the backup file into 2Gb chunks, there is a setting in the backup2ws job to do this.

The 1 minute backup is usually a sign that the backup did not actually happen. As fas as I know backup2ws stills works with the "expired" version of RAR.
If you are doing rsync backups then this may be understandable as no files were refreshed or added.

Do a small backup eg /root only and then check the backup file to see it has the correct contents. Install WinRAR on your Windows PC to open and view the backup file, that is also atdmay contrib sirte.

Remember also that ONLY the 911 job backs up mysql data automatically, other backup jobs you create do not seem to run this routine.

I have seen the 911 job many times in the forum regarding backup. What exactly is the 911 job?

It's the Disaster Recovery Backup Job, which backs up all settings and data files including a mysql dump that are needed to recreate the server after doing a fresh install of the operating system & a restore.
It does not backup or restore any contribs, you will need to reinstall these manually, but the configs for the contribs will be there.

Ray,

Thanks for your reaction but...

I already enabled the chunks, in my case, of 700 Mb, to fit on CD's.
Actually Backup2WS worked super before the message "Please Register"  :-(

What I mean is:
If and when I buy a license of WinRAR where and how do I install this license. The guys of RARlab told me that the license-file should store into the WinRAR folder wherever this may be on my SME server.

Who has experience with this?

Cheers!

Hi,

I'm looking to go down this same track, did you manage to resolve this issue of licencing? Do I need to buy a winrar licence for my SME server or is there a linux version I need to buy?

In Darrell May's contrib folder there is a Linux version of rar that must be installed at the same time as the backup2ws contrib. There is also a Windows version of WinRAR that you can install on a windows box. It is very useful for selectively restoring individual files etc.

The backup2ws contrib and both versions of rar appear to work without a licence, but if your organisation requires licencing then you should do so.
