NEWBE haveing problems with setting up a domain server
« on: October 05, 2004, 05:01:08 PM »
Hi

I am new to SME so I hope someone can help.  I have set up what should be a domain server using SME. All the settings in the server manager appear to be set correctly. I have a number of windows boxes XP 2k 98 etc and although they can "join" the domain by changing from workgroup to domain when I try to log on or add a domain user I am told that the domain is not available or that the trust relationship between the workstation and server are bad. I have tried varoius settings on both my Server and workstation with no success.

One of the main obvious problems is that I cannot ping the domain.  I can ping the servers name and the IP address. Also I can browes onto the server as well as copy files to and from. But when I try to log onto the server, no joy! :-(

There's a registry patch the needs to be applied to Win XP clients before they can successfully login to an SME domain.  The patch is located on your server here: /home/e-smith/files/server-resources/regedit/winxplogon.reg.

Or you can apply it from here:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\netlogon\parameters]
"RequireSignOrSeal"=dword:00000000

What is the layout of your network? What handles DHCP and DNS? What other servers/devices do you have running on you network? IE: routers windows 2k servers or firewalls.

You should give more details about the network. If it is correctly configured, DNS, ping and the like must be in order and function.

There is a contrib called "advanced workgroup" (e-smith-advworkgroup-0.3-4.noarch.rpm from http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/smeserver/contribs/jprice/beta/e-smith-advworkgroup/) which can also handle the Samba/Domain stuff you need but the resolvings have to be set up properly.
