Started with 4.1.2 after customer complained about the stability of ...Winproxy... Had some experience with Redhat/Samba, but E-smith proved to be a gift ftom heaven. Since then used 5.1.2, 5.6 and now 6.0.1. Total of 8 machines, including test stuff. Loads of contribs are used.

4 installs running across Scotland. Three are in small office networks, either providing firewall services and file sharing services, or for the whole suite of mail/vpn/ftp/file/web etc etc. Add-ons are ClamAV and SpamAssassin. It's just a great platform, with only one unexpected crash in 3 years. Also run a home install for test website work, mail for the family, general QA stuff.

Even for my own test box, I'd shell out for managed security support (e.g. virus/patch) and auto-updates. I know the business clients would too. As to how much, if that's of interest, I'll sk them.  ;-)

Yes, many businesses from small to large types, from 20 to 200 users. Mostly Schools, government free agencies, non-profit and a few private ones.

I currently have 17 servers placed in service for small businesses 3-20 users. My own server is doing service as a webserver for about 15 websites, and I have a few dial in customers. This is the easiest distro to cofigure for server/gateway operation, and quite streight forward to use for web services. I have found a couple of applications I have not been able to run, but I have not given up yet. I am in the process of setting up a test unit for a littlwork.

I wish I had the expertice to help with development, but at this time I do not.

I agree with "Long live SME, The server that actually works"
If you think you know whats going on, you obviously have no idea whats going on!

SME been used in my business as a very useful file and print server since 5.5 (now 6.01)

This has been for about 10 users plus some intranet stuff mainly phpGroupware.

Been very very stable, very successful.  As a linux newbie when I started SME was great.  Now the only frustrating bit is not being able to apt get install.

I have since put in SME 6.01 for a friend's business.  This was for 5 users.  Apart from teething troubles with his wierd ADSL connection and XP SP2 this too has been rock solid.

I have replaced our company's NT4 server with an SME server 6.01 running server/gateway mode, domain controller, no email. It is supporting a small company of 10 employees performing the function of a file/print server. All the client machines are Windows 98SE or XP Pro machines.

Getting the XP-SP2 boxes to log in to the domain has had it problems but only with a virgin XP-SP2 box. All the existing XP-SP1 boxes that were upgraded to SP2 had no problem. I don't know if it is an SME or Microsoft problem. Probably depends upon who you ask. :-D

The server has been quite stable.

I'd like to know more about a file backup/restore system.

Dann,
I recommend you try the registry fix located at:
/home/e-smith/files/server-resources/regedit

it should work fine after applying it.

50 production servers

60 production servers ranging from 5 users to 65.
Custom monitoring software over ssh and auto update of packages from all machines.
We do remote support only...

The firewall is very good but over the years I have been very quick to update vulnerable packages.

If you use software RAID  its worth putting a third disk in as a spare that you can bring up on disk failure

Larger customers run
Hardware RAID 5 + 1 online spare
Redundant power supply
significant cusyomisation on some of the larger customers without breaking the system sometimes  causes exrta time

Hello,

I work for a big and growing nonprofit
I have an email server with about 200 email accounts an any given time.

I am running:
squidguard
spam assassin
amavis + clam

(the cool thing is that its on a donated dual p3 server with 2 gigs of RAM!)

Our uptime is about 99.9% (the other .1% is intentional reboots)

At the other 4 offices (2 more up and running within a month) I run another SME server at each as a private server and gateway. We will be installing a VPN'ed T1 line between all of the offices very soon.

Considering how exchange would cost us 10's of thousands of dollars, with the extra money we can do alot more good in the community.

Hi, i am not a consultant ;-) - so besides of my home server:

A 6.01 in my office. Running for 4 + years now. < 10 Users, Router, Firewall, File, Print, Mail using 2 own domains with a DSL broadband with fixed IP. Runs with all these wonderful contribs by jesper (hug you, man!).

This server replaced our NT, later w2k MS-Server about 1 Month ago. We (better say i the dummi) had serious problems with dns and active directory, so i kicked MS-Server completely.

A very special lawyer type application with lots of funny access and MS crap is only running from a windoze fileshare. :-( Seriously: I tried everything on samba.

So i put a plain winxp box with good SATA Raid 1 drives (WD raptor) just for that application. Runs nicely. Domain logons, roaming profiles, backups easier than before with MS-Server. This app always ran better from a MS-Share - you guess why....

Yesterday i downgraded the SME Server from an old P III with SCSI  HW RAID 1 (Mylex Controller/2 IBM DNES) to a tiny box running Via C3 900, 512 MB, 20 GB EIDE drive.

I did this for environmental reasons: The old RAID was extremely hot, noisy and power consumptive. Also i had to change it, because i always change productive Harware after a 3 year lifecycle.

Very lucky with SME.

Future plans are: Give Samba 3 and 6.5 a try with that special application. Install VPN at last  ;-)

Here goes sorry if this is somewhat hard to follow.
I have four companies using SME 6.0x servers.

1. Used as a front end to an old Exchange server.
Also used as an FTP repository.
Total inside users 20, outside ftp users approx 50.
Initally installed for security reasons with their Exchange server.
They're using spam and Clam from Jesper Knudsen.
100% happy with the implementation.

2,3. Server and gateway for two seperate businesses, each with one server/location.
They're using spam and Clam from Jesper Knudsen.
Mail Blocking from Dungog.
Using email, webmail, pptp, file, print, http, gateway.
One has 10 users, the other has 30.
100% happy with the implementation.
One was a new business with no network, the other was to replace an old Windows NT server that was unstable and needed inhouse email.

4. Server only at a company with 8 locations.  Each site has its own SME server hosting email, webmail, file, print, http.  There is also an IPCOP 1.3/1.4 server at each site for site to site IPSEC VPN's. The number of users range from 10 to 40.
Each individual server hosts their local email.  I subdivided the domain name into locations, ie user@location.domain.com.
All servers have the same samba domain.
They're using spam and Clam from Jesper Knudsen.
Mail Blocking from Dungog.
Seperate SME server is used for PPTP access at primary location.
Hacked the scripts to modify printcap allowing me to send an overlay to our PCL printers for invoicing, purchase orders, etc.
All Dell Raid 5 servers with internal DLT tape drives.
Excellent uptime, very little administration.
Windows XP Pro workstations running Office XP/2003.
The two biggest issues are having an easy to use Outlook corporate address book and single sign-on.
I worked around the address book somewhat by adding a personal address book to outlook that is copied down, if changed, to the workstation when the user logs in.
Single sign-on is accomplished by setting up multiple users at each location for those who travel. (ugly)

I have some 20 servers running. Most of them are 5.6, and some 5.5 to 6.01.

I have a 2 tier setup with SME as Web App. server and RH9 as MySQL back-end server which hold a forum for over 4,000,000 web hit per day. (with a throuth put for over 20G per day.)

2 other 5.6 for web hosting with about 30,000 hit per day with 10+ domains, and many other for office server/gateway from 5 to 60 users.
Best Regards,
