SME has small hosting server enviroment
« on: October 09, 2004, 12:09:48 PM »
Hello,

For that last couple of years I've been running a cobalt raq3 server, hosting about 15 different domains and CMS based sites, their mail, webmail, php, mysql and so on. In fact it acts as my private hosting server. However the box is getting old and there are no longer updates for the machine, so I would like to change to another sollution that can do the job and is:
- open source
- stable
- easy to work on (not to much linux command promt work)
- can host at lease 15 different domains
- can handle different users
- webmail (Open Webmail)

I plan to throw in an older computer and use as the basis for the server. (1qhz, 768 mb ram, 60 gb harddisk).

I'm not very much into Linux...

Is SME server the right choice?

Good Choice

LarsE,

The SME would be an excellent fit matching your specifications with one possible exception.  Email users are actual machine users irrespective of domain.

That means if you hosted www.mydomain.com and www.theirdomain.com user larse would get email to larse sent to either larse@mydomain.com or larse@theridomain.com.  You could not have a larse for mydomain.com and a larse for theirdomain.com.

There is a contrib fron dungog.net (not free) that will allow you to set up email for lars@mydomain1.com, and lars@mydomain2.com. Tare alias's, and you would need to have different user names and passwords for these two people, but it works, I use it at my location.

Hi everyone,
Spookily I have very similar requirements. I have an old Cobalt Raq3 whose lease is about to expire. I host about a dozen domains and am looking at both SME Server and ClarkConnect.

How would SME handle these (extended) requirements?

Primary DNS
Multiple Domains
Common Setup Across domains
IMAP/SSH support
Easy to add components for all domains (such as adding Squirrel Mail, Tomcat, or OpenExchange)
Little-to-No Command Line configuring

While Cobalts have not been properly supported for a few years now, I did enjoy the general lack of having to go to the command line, as well as being able to add a new domain easily from the browser and having the system set up the profiles without hassle: like adding file paths and users, as well as adding the appropriate info into the Apache httpd.conf file to name a few.

While I was told by friends that ClarkConnect was a well supported product, I was told in their forum's that it is not really designed for multiple domains:
http://www.clarkconnect.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=ClarkConnect3BETA&Number=63264&fpart=

Is SME still a good choice?

Thanks everyone!

Geoffrey

I have an option in server-manager installed from a contrib (not sure which one - from the version 3 upgrade script I think?)
the panel is under configuration and is called E-mail Blocking.
This lets you specify which user can receive mail from specific domains.
No good if you've got 2 people with the same name but very handy if you don't.

Lars

I found myself in exactly the same situation, I run a RaQ3, 2 RaQ4's and a Qube3.  I've replaced them all with SME except 1 RaQ4 and never looked back.  The only reason I still have one is because it is leased from a hosting company that sits on 3 OC3's that our CEO don't want to give up.  With the help of solarspeed.net I keep limping it along, but as soon as I find a new home the CEO agrees with, I'll replace it with an SME server.  I'll probably be one of the first to go to the commercial versions of Lycoris distros as soon as they are deemed stable.  I'm not a Linux pro either, but I've found my options with te SME to be better than the Cobalts and I've had Cobalts since 99...

sme should do just what you want, except you may need to implement these steps to manage your virtual domain aliases. This will allow you to have user@domain1, user@domain2 etc addresses.
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/rmitchell/smeserver/howto/virtual%20domain%20email%20aliases%20HOWTO%20for%20sme%20server.htm

The other contrib mentioned previously will allow blocking of email to certain domains.

Hi All,

I'm hosting one website and their mail is hosting at their ISP.

I can't send any email to this domain. I'm running SME contrib version.

Under Server manager :

ftp.tanknology.com.au Local Self Modify Remove
proxy.tanknology.com.au Local Self Modify Remove
wpad.tanknology.com.au Local Self Modify Remove

I try removing the mail.tanknology.com.au but no luck.

If i dig

Optus have there mail server running very tight rules for spam, They block from dynamic IP's and even most static? They also do a reverse look on the IP sending the mail and if it don't resolve the mail get's rejected You will have a very hard time get mail to optus?
