Topic: USB external hard drive hot-plug problem

I have installed an external USB 2.0 IDE hard disk drive. I set it up in SME 6.0.1 and I can read and write to it OK. My problem is if I disconnect the USB cable or power off the USB drive I receive no notice that the drive is no longer active and if I reconnect it I receive no notice. If I write to the drive when it's disconnected the write finishes OK but of course the file is not written to the drive.
Anybody know how to make the system respond to the USB disconnect?
