RAID 5
« on: October 14, 2004, 03:55:33 PM »
Hi,

I assume it's possible to RAID 5 with SME 6 if it's all done in the hardware controller.

Is there a list on the web somewhere of controllers that work with SME 6?  If not, could you share a few controllers that you know work fine?

Thanks,

Chris Buechler

Stick with SCSI RAID.  Most Compaq, Adaptec, some Mylex & LSI.  As the base OS is RH7.3 look at the HCL for this base OS for the most accurate guide (and also look at the manufacturers website to see if they have drivers listed ofr RH7.3)

eiceic,

Raid5 works fine with built in kernel software on SME - just set up the disks and a raidtab, partition, format and mount
... and it does so with any ide/scsi controller that your mainboard bios supports.

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Software-RAID-HOWTO.html

Like meanpenguin said 3ware works "out of the box" i.e. drivers built into kernel since forever .-)
Proof is plenty in this forum - I could testify for 3ware myself but install only software raid nowadays.

A little search in the forum will reveal that many (better assume) ALL other adapters will need a driver for Raid5 operation and also show you to
- forget about Promise and Highpoint (and Adaptec?). If you are not willing to set up an SME for src compilation I'd rather recommend to stay clear.
Here's the link to search the HCL anyway: http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/
(note: don't forget to choose "complete list" and remember 7.3 is "pretty old stuff" for most hardware people and RH :-( )

Regards
Reinhold

Adaptec 2010S (zcr) Ultra320 Raid 5 http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product/proddetail.html?sess=no&language=English+US&prodkey=ASR-2010S&cat=Products works straight out of the box. It uses the dpt_i2o driver and is autodetected by SME6.0.1 during the install. I have three 73GB U320 drives in a raid 5 config which appear to the OS as a single 136GB drive.

I've had good luck with the Mylex controllers too.  Adaptecs are cheaper.

I've had problems with Compaq and Dell controllers in the past...

I'm using a SmartArray 221 hardware RAID controller in a Compaq Proliant 6500 and it installed beautifully as a RAID5 with 5 SCSI disks.

I also tried installing on a Dell Precision 420 with 4 SCSI disks and some Adaptec hardware RAID controller, but for some reason, SME always "saw through" the configuration and would only ever install on a single disk.  I ended up installing as RAID1 and then added the extra disks separately and mounted them at /home/e-smith/files/users and /home/e-smith/files/ibays to give me the advantage of more space.
