Hosts - stopping spy/ad-ware
« on: October 21, 2004, 04:49:17 PM »
Good Morning,

After poking around, I'm not finding what I'm looking for. I've looked at http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=14348.0 and thought it might touch on what I'm wanting to accomplish. I have used various hosts files that I've downloaded from the Internet that resolve spy/ad-ware to the local host. Instead of putting this file on every computer, I'm looking for a way to import it into the SME box that is my proxy server.

Hi,

You want to create something along the lines of

/etc/e-smith/templates-custom/etc/hosts/30spyware

and then do

Code: [Select]
/sbin/e-smith/expand-template /etc/hosts

Could you share your host file links. I have found a few on the net.

Regards Duncan

Good Morning,

Thanks for the information. I'm converting the ie-spyad registry files into hosts files. They have over 1,000 hosts. I'll try to post it here after I get it done.

Good Morning,

Arrgghhh, manually editing this 450+ page document not counting the adult.reg file, whew. It will be a bit. It would be neat if someone could write some kind of processor that will read the ie-spyad registry files and import them into a file. I'm asking for too much though. I'll manually edit until someone is motivated to do a contrib. I'm using the ie-spyad registry files for my hosts file as they have well over 1,500 entries.

Good Evening,

Ok, let's back up here. Here's a couple of links that look like some good hosts files.

Just do as stated above and hopefully I can stop them.
