hi!

i like e-smith to run as a file server playing mp3-files over the network, not as an internet-, but as a intranet-server. it should serve 4 workstations.

is this possible with e-smith or should i better choose another linux distribution?

Yes you can do this.  One of the options available is server only mode.  There is a blade in the new version that sets it up as a mp3 server.

There is, essentially, no difference between intranet/Internet in this case.  The difference would be whether you open the access to the server from the Internet, or not.

Merlin,
My understanding of things is that Samba installs with e-smith. Just set up an I-bay and in the configuration console, set up a workgroup for your windows network. Works great. That is how I put MP3s into the jukebox; Then use my browser to choose what I want to stream.

Al, you're right--Samba is how e-smith does the windows file-sharing.  It seems, though, that most of the responses are referring to the jukebox blade, when there's no need to use it here.  Just set up an ibay and double-click on the files you want to play.  Simple.  The jukebox is cool, but not really needed here.

Merlin, the procedures for making and using i-bays are discussed in some detail in the manual, which is available here in a variety of formats.
