satellite (sm200d) & sme
« on: October 24, 2004, 06:40:04 AM »
Hi, I was just wondering what the state of play was with regards to the sm200d card and e-smith?

I am currently using ihug as my sat provider, and I have installed the old sme 5.12 and the sm200d driver found at the ifost.org.au site.  Everything is working fine but I have one small issue that is giving me a problem.   The satellite manual config in the server manager asks me for an IP address, however ihug don't give out ip addresses, they are handed out dynamically, so if the connection drops and reconnects, I have to go into the config panel, and change the ip address so that the routing tables are updated correctly.

Does anyone have:

a) a fix for this OR
b) a how-to for getting the sm200d working an alternate way?

I'm also interested to know if anyone is happily running the sm200d card in a later version of e-smith, and where I may get the drivers.

Alternately, I also have a pentamedia card here if anyone has had better luck with that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Nick

tex,

You might want to ask this to

...he once was responsible for the kernel 2.4 driver the sm200d uses.

P.S.: You know about http://unixathome.org/broadband/    ?

I have Stephan's driver if you want it but have not had a chance to try it yet.

thanks for the replies... I was hoping to get a reply from someone who had actually got the setup up and running, but I managed to make some headway with the problem I was having with regards to the dynamic ip address.

I managed to solve the dynamic ip allocation by fiddling with the code in the ip-change event, so if anyone else  needs a fix for this let me know, and I'll send the instructions over.

Sadly, I have had to use e-smith 5.12 to get the connection running, but it seems to work well enough!!  If anyone else has it running on a later version, then I would love to hear!

thanks

tex,

5.12 frankly has so many serious security issues I would think twice about continuing to use it as server/gateway.

Thanks Reinhold.

I would much rather be running a newer version, but at the moment 5.12 is the only version I have any info about running the sm200d satellite card on.

I'm not actually using it as a server, I'm really only using it as a firewall/gateway.  I have a server that does the email and everything else sitting behind the sme box, so I'm hoping that even with the security problems, it's not going to be a big issue if I don't have anything else on the sme box.... but I could be completely wrong!!

As soon as I can find someone who is actually running a later version with the sm200d (or pent@value) satellite card then I'll be looking at upgrading.
