Maybe this is a stupid question, but I can't find an answer in the documentation:

Is it possible to use SME server as a file- and mail-server within a Windows workgroup (NOT a domain) with Windows XP home workstations? Are there any restrictions (which)?

The only stupid question is one not asked.

By default, when you install the SME Server it will be setup for Windows networking because it includes SAMBA.  However, if you use your Windows box and browse your network neighbourhood, it will not be in the same workgroup as your Windows boxes.  You will need to change the workgroup on the SME Server to be the same.

This can be accomplised through the SME Serve manager (http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/server-manager, where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP of the SME Server).  You will need to supply the admin user name and the password used when you setup the SME Server.  Once the web interface is loaded, find the link Workgroup under the Configuration heading.  Here you can enter the name of your Windows Workgroup.  DOn't forget to save the configuration.

Now that the SME Server is in the same workgroup, you will need to make sure that you add user accounts to the SME Server that are identical to your WIndows User accounts, complete with passwords that are the same.  This will allow you to seamlessly browse the SME shares, otherwise you will need to enter a user name and password each time you attach to the network share.

Now you may want to add an IBAY for the sharing of files.  Without adding any IBAY's you will have the Primary Ibay and the Users home folder available for sharing only.  You can also use the SAMBA config file to set up other shares on the Server, but I would suggest just configuring an IBAY.
