Installing rpm/contribs
« on: October 27, 2004, 05:30:39 AM »
I noticed that a lot of the contribs do not have instructions on how to install them, just an rpm file to download.  I have followed the "How to download and intall a RPM" instructions, but.  I installed the "Update System" contrib following these instructions and the update system was listed under the group "Unknown" in the server-manager page.  I ran the command /sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade and then rebooted and this fixed it but my question is this, what exactly do I need to do each time I install an rpm file or install a contrib?

Thanks,
Thomas

Usually not more than you did, and in most cases you don't need the post-upgrade. That is as the name says for upgrades, but if in doubt that won't hurt to do... Followed by reboot to initialize the changes.

It's not very often that you should reboot or run the post-upgrade command after installing an rpm.

Generally it follows:
1. Install rpm and follow any other instructions that might come with it (restarting a service such as apache etc).

2. If it uses a page in the server manager but shows up as "unkown" then you need to run /etc/e-smith/events/actions/navigation-conf (you will see a lot of text fly past but generally you can ignore this).  This will sort this out.

3. If it still doesn't work then read any install instructions again and possibly try to install again (some times it just doesn't work the first time ;-) )

4. If that still doesn't work then try the post-upgrade and reboot.

5. Still no luck, shout for help here!
Smile :-)......
