Mail Server - Open Relay Prevention
« on: November 03, 2004, 12:12:17 AM »
Hi there,

I'm running SME 6.0 very nicely thank you. However, I need a bit of guidance (pointing in the right direction :-o ) on "open relays" regarding the mail server part of things.

1) Does SME by default prevent an open relay being set up. If so, how can I check this is in fact happenning?

2)If not...how do I prevent this. I'm pretty sure it requires editing the sendmail.conf file but I do not want to do this if it will affect the SME operation.

I'm running spamassassin and clam/amavis also.

Thanks for your help in anticipation,

Best regards,

John

enter you server details in the Address to test: field and then hit the test for relay button. http://www.abuse.net/relay.html

I can't even see an option to enable relay ! :-(

I had hoped to be able to permit users to relay through my server (presumably using SMTP AUTH) but can't see any option to permit outgoing E-mail except from teh local LAN or the webmail interface.

Anyone able to point me at some options ?

Thanks,

Andy

have a look at this
http://www.pagefault.org/howto/securemail.shtml
this is what is recommended if you are using SME 5.5+.
If you are using an older version, I suppose I should say you should upgrade as the lastest version works a treat, have a look at pop before SMTP
http://www.stickit.nu/pop-before-smtp/

Thanks Mumm-Ra but - Ouch  :-?

I had thought/hoped that I could do at least the basics without having to resort to command line instructions and unofficial downloads.

I would have thought the need for users to be able to send and receive mail regardless of location would have been a prerequisite ?

Looks like it might be time to try another Distro before I get too closely attached to this one !

ClarkConnect looked good last time I read up on it.....

Just hope I don't end up having to go back to Windows and Exchange !!

The contribs are widely used and so widely tested. And don't kid yourself - linux isnt windows. You use command lines sometimes.

Using CLI for install etc is not a problem.

What is a concern is having non-standard code running on the box which is then not reflected in the standard configuration pages of the server.

I am glad you posted - and game me the nudge to check the supplied links again. When first posted, the website at pagefault.org was not online. The other option seemed very out of date and generic.

Having seen the pafefault.org site now, complete with screenshots showing complete SME Server integration, that seems the way to go. I'll install as per the pagefault.org instructions this evening - seems perfect.

Cheers,

Andy
