SME 5.0, ISA NIC AND A EXTRA NIC ( eth2 )

Hi All,

From my previous posting you might have known that i was trying to install a 3c509 ISA nic. This is working except for the fact on a reboot you have to issue "insmod 3c509" and then reboot the network otherwise it wont work as you get a "waiting for initizilation" error otherwise. If anyone can point out something i can do to fix this I would be extremely grateful.

My SME server will be a gateway and server to 2 computers and 2 computers only. I dont have a hub or standard network cables. What I do have is 5 nics and the 3 crossover cables. I hope for 3 nics in the server and one in each computer, with the cables going from the server to the cable modem, my computer and my sisters computer. Problem is that being a total newbie to linux etc I have no idea how to go about this. I tried following the instructions on a how to on this matter but didn't get very far. Maybe this wont work with sme 5 since it was written for e-msith 4.1.2 ???????? Basically my ISA nic died and couldn't get an IP which meant to internet access. So in order to fix this I had to re-install SME server 5.0 since I wasn't sure how to reverse this process. Is there anyone out there who has managed to do this under 5.0 ??? and could possibly help me out ?

eth0=3c509
eth1=eepro
eth2=tulip ( or will be if we can do this ).

Anyhelp people can provide would be greatly appreciated, as long as they provide instructions on how to go back if it goes wrong !!!!

Cheers,

Daryll

Hi,
did you set the isa nics with differend IRQ's?
I have set all the nic's with separeted IRQ;
i.e.  3 nic's means (for example) 5,7,11. (set with dos-utility)
If 2 nic's has the same IRQ; one of them won't initialisize.
Even mem. use of the nic can be set.
I tested my pc with 2,3, and 4 nic's; they all worked in e-smith.

There's only one isa nic in the system which has its irq and i/o set as done with the dos utility, but it still doesn't activate itself. Not so much of a major problem. Just a pain the backside if I want to do a remote reboot as I wont be able to re-connect after the reboot cause that card is the one connected to my cable modem !

Are the other nic's initializised by pci-bus? And is the isa irq excluded from using by pci; set in bios? Otherwise one pci-nic and isa-nic can have same irq(shared by bios).
bios initializise pci-bus first, then isa-bus.
Normaly linux use his own setup, but with isa card's it might nessesary.

Let me know,
