I had the same need, because the kernel do not have the radiohams modules in, I used thes help from Duncan and work great.

If you really need to build a new kernel, not just need kernel sources for compiling something else; it is more complicated. I did it for including usb support in my kernel.

I used Sagem Fast 800. It is in french. But you only need to follow step 1 and step 3. Ask if you want some translation.
