sending outbound mails via SME

Hi,

We use exchange 2000 at the moment as our outbound mail server. We have an SME box that is used for anti-spam and anti-virus, which forwards mail to the exchange server. The exchangeserver sends any outbound emails from the user directly to the MX record of the recipient. Our SME server is setup as Server only with one nic.

I want to have exchange send all outbound mails through the SME box so that the anti-spam has more non-spam to chew through to improve its bayes filter.

If i telnet to the smtp port of the sme server and send a mail from an internal email address to an external one (say a hotmail account), SME forwards the mail to the internal mail server. Clearly this isnt right.

Is it possible to have SME recieve incoming mails and forward them to the internal mail server and have it recieve out bound mails and have it deliver them to the MX of the recipient ? This could/should be done using the records listed in the domains section of sme. If the sender is on the domains list and the recipient isnt, then its outbound. If the sender isnt on the domain list, but the recipient is, then its inbound. If neither are on the domain list, its relay and blocked.

Is this kinda setup possible ?

Thanks for the info, but that doesnt help im afraid.

Its not about any exchange issue, its about simply getting SME to know where to route emails when they come in.

Could you just have Exchange forward a copy of all emails to a user (say outboundham) on your SME box?

erm, that might work, but i dont think exchange can do that. it can forward to an Exchange Mailbox, but it wont accept an smtp style mail address.

Does Exchange support automatic forwarding? If so, just create a mailbox on your Exchange server that is automatically forwarded to your SME box.
