I wonder if anyone can help me here?
I have a network centred on an SME 5.6 box that consists of a number of W98 , W2K, and XP-Pro boxes. All worked well until just now .....
One of my colleagues has just bought a Sony VAIO VGN-S2XP. He brought this to me and asked if I could configure it so that it joins the domain when he's at work. 'No problem!' says I - 'I've done this with loads of Dell and Compaq laptops.'
Anyway, to cut a long story short I did all the registry changes needed to make sure an XP box can join a domain, checked all the network connections by accessing the Internet, Putty to the server etc, opened the 'System' icon in control panel, specified the domain, requested a join, and got .....
A domain controller for the domain <NAME> could not be contacted.
Ensure that the domain name is typed correctly.
If the name is correct, click Details for troubleshooting information.
On clicking Details I get ......
Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\WINDOWS\debug\dcdiag.txt.
The domain name <NAME> might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.
If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain stc:
The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.<NAME>
Common causes of this error include the following:
- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.
- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:
<NAME>
. (the root zone)

I checked all network settings against other XP boxes but I cannot see a difference. Working on the principle that computers always do what they're told to do, can anyone suggest where I might look to see where the laptop is being prevented from joining the domain?
ipconfig/all gives the same output as on other XP-Pro boxes that are working correctly.
