I've noticed Windows XP SP2 and some of my machines take longer to switch network printers than with XP SP1.
I noticed it with Office XP SP3 apps, but I haven't done enough troubleshooting to pinpoint the problem.
I updated to Charlie Brady's Samba 2.2.12 RPM's (thanks for posting), but it didn't seem to help (didn't hurt though).  I also updated the printer drivers (HP) to the latest versions with no help.

:-) More info on the subject: It takes several sec. to open the network printer - approx. 30 - 50 sec. Also deleting finished print jobs take a while. Same result for SP1 and SP2.
I've been running 6.0 with same problem. Later I installed CUPS - it worked very well, but I prefer solution "out of the box" - tested and working together.

On our network we wait 2-5 sec for Win98SE, and 10-30 sec on XP mashines.

SP1 / SP2 makes no difference.

Anyone have an idea?

I have the same problem on 6.5 RC1

Has anyone resolved this yet? even simple stuff like getting printer properties and page setups etc can take around 10 seconds.

Hi All,

I have seen similar problems to this before using windows XP.
The solution from microsoft is to setup the printer as a local printer as opposed to a network printer and instead of using local lpt1 choose the path to the network printer.
I don't exactly understand the logic behind this, but it has worked for us on several occasions. So maybe it may solve your problem.

Regards
Jack
ps other solutions  I have seen on the net involve capturing an LPT port and using net use to map it to the network path of the printer \\servername\printername  and then set that as the port for the printer, I think I can remember doing this from a logon script years ago for old DOS based apps not a very forward move I should think.

I've got 6.5 and very slow printing as well.  I've tried installing as local printer and changing port to network address, but it's no faster.

Here's my configuration:
SME 6.5
WinXP Home
Epson740 on USB1
WinXP Epson Esc/P driver

I used 6.01 for quite some time and just upgraded to 6.5 (fresh install and dumped files back into ibays/user folders).  With 6.01, I set up printers with Cups and that seemed to work fine.  What exactly is 6.5 using for printing now (ie. Cups, lpr, etc...).  I can't seem to access cups to try manually setting up a printer like I had done previously with 6.01.

Any further suggestions?
