upgrade from 5.6 to 6.0.1
« on: November 17, 2004, 12:28:18 AM »
Should I anticipate any problems with upgrading from 5.6 to the latest release? I have 5.6 with SpamAssassin, ClamAV, Isoqlog, User Panel, Mailfront, Qmail queue mgmt, and system monitor installed.

Is the standard process to do a backup to desktop, install fresh, restore from desktop?

You should not experience too many problems, but you will need to re-install most of your contribs. In some instances, it is best to uninstall them in 5.6 and re-install them in vs 6.xx
When you reinstall, check whether your old contribs are in fact suitable for vs 6.xx  In many cases, they ae not, so get new one written for 6.xx  And by all means, backup to the hilt before proceeding with the upgrade, so as to recover your old o/s if things go wrong.

PS:  Restoration of a backup done in 5.6 onto the new system 6.xx will not do the trick...

I understand my current contribs probably won't work but  are you saying I shouldn't backup to desktop, install 6.0.1 fresh, and then restore from desktop? Thats the way I have always upgraded in the past. If not that procedure, then how should I plan to do this?

At the end of the upgrade, all your users, pseudo, groups, mail settings, ibays, ect are there, intact.  Nothing is lost.  So doing a restore from the old 5.6 will not achieve anything - it will not fix old contribs not supported by vs 6.

Check each contrib and ascertain whether they are OK with Vs6 - some are. leave them alone.  For contribs which are not suitable, whilst you may get away with a reinstall, you may as well get rid of them before upgrading, then reinstall a suitable version after the upgrade.

To be safe, backup to desktop + make a re-install diskette. If all fails, you can re-install 5.6 from CD ansd restore, nothing is lost.  Another way is to "ghost" your drive, and upgrade the copied drive.

I have logged a number of upgrades, can pass you the document off line for info, its quiet simple.  chris.
