SME 5.1, e-mail solution with NT/XP-Clients
« on: November 18, 2004, 12:35:23 PM »
We are using the SME 5.1 in our office. The clients are running on winnt or winxp. From each client e-mails are processed with ms-outlook directly from our ISP.

Now I would like to configure the SME to fetch the e-mails from our ISP and then deliver to the clients. Or configure the clients to fetch the e-mails for each account from the SME. This is because I want to install the spamassasin and the clamav on the SME to scan the e-mails before the mails reach the clients.

Does anybody have a solution for this question?
Thanks for any helpful reply in advance.

Hi Stefan!

Which function has the SME server then in your environment?

Please consider installing SME 6.0.1-01 together with the update Scripts and you will have a complete and up-to-date solution including AV Check and SpamAssassin (and much more)

Hallo Stefan,

thank you for your reply. We are using the SME only as fileserver. The clients log in and are able to use the ibays, which are defined for each account.

I use fetchmail to retreive the ISP-mail and store it on my sme-server.

Hello Curly,

o.k., I understand that fetchmail get's the e-mails from the ISP. The e-mails are then stored on the SME. Btw, where exactly are they stored?

And now the question: how do the nt/xp-clients (using ms-outlook) get the e-mails?

Fetchmail retreives the mail, then feeds it to SME's qmail. Qmail stores it somewhere in the user-directory (/home/e-smith/files/users/<username>/Maildir) in two directories: 'new' for unread mail and 'cur' for read mail. The mail for admin is stored in /home/e-smith/Maildir.

Retreival for clients is the simple part: just point Outlook to the SME-server with the user's name and password and retreive the mail.

Hello Curly,

thank you, that seems to work. I just took the webmail to generate a message to a user. Pointing ms-outlook to the SME is the trick. What I don't know right now, is weather our ISP want's to have a password for the SMTP. I think not for the SMTP only for the POP.

Is there a howto for configuring fetchmail and qmail for a few accounts? Would be also nice to have the av-scan and the spamassasin for the e-mails when fetching them from our ISP. Maybe there's also a howto?

Does it make sense upgrading from SME 5.1.2. to 6.0.x?

SMTP from SME-server to your ISP should work without passwords.

Configuring fetchmail is easy, just follow the manual-page (man fetchmail). Version 5.1.2 usually has the man-pages but misses the binary 'man', if you install that, the manual pages work. Otherwise use Google (fetchmail manual).

Spamassassin: See sme.swerts-knudsen.dk
Anti-virus: I use Antivir, others use ClamAv, somewhere on this website there should be a howto.

Upgrading: That's up to you. Version 6 is more safe, but that can be helped when you apply some fixes and are careful with the services that you turn on at the 'internet-side' of your SME-server. Version 6 requires more hardware for the same performance.
Version 6 has ClamAv and Spamassassin built-in.

The upgrading part is somewhat sensitive, you'll see some remarks about upgrading when someone mentions that he still uses version 5.1.2 or 5.6 , so I won't tell that I still use 5.1.2 .

Hello Curly,

thank's a lot for your help. It seems I got the things running. Thank's also to Vincent FILALI et Pascal SCHIRRMANN at http://e-smith.dyndns.org/ for making it easy to handle fetchmail in the server-configuration.
