Backup to desktop stops at 3.99GB
« on: November 18, 2004, 11:57:15 PM »
Hi all,
I have an SME 6.0.1 install with 14GB of data, the desktop backup screen tells me that the backup size should be around 8GB.  The backup stops at 3.99GB and stays there. It is vital that I get a backup working.  Is this a known problem?  How do I get a backup working?  I have no tape drive.

Regards Brad

yes this is a known problem for a really long time.  There is a newer version by D. May located here:
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/smeserver/contribs/dmay/mitel/contrib/Backup2ws/

Supposed to have support for files bigger then 4GB.

RATS,
ran that install and no difference, backup to desktop stops copying at 3.99GB.  Any other instructions to get it going?

When using the backup2ws contrib you will still run into the 2Gb "issue".
You need to configure the backup2ws job (in the server manager panel) to split the backup file into 2Gb or less "chunks". It will automatically split the backup file into multiple parts of the specified size (which should be less than 2Gb).
Search these forums on backup or backup2ws as there has been a lot said about this isuue and why it exists.

I'm not using Opera so I don't know if that will work any better (for Backups).
Check that you can do a Restore from the Backup file as you may still have problems if your backup file is bigger than 2Gb, and you don't want to discover that when you really need to Restore your system and find that you cannot.

As mentioned backup2ws by Darrel will work if you keep it to under 2 gig sizes. This presumably has the advantage of a complete backup of mysql etc. Make sure you get the SME one for versions 6 and not the e-smith one for versions 5.?

Another option if you only want to backup a directory on a Samba share is to use Winrar or Winzip. Winrar works from the command line or from Windows and allows you to view those RAR backups you are doing from backup2ws. It also creates zip files if you prefer. You are limited in file size to Windows file size which is substantially larger as your program is running under the Windows computer.

However if planning to back up to DVD then ISO has a limitation of 4 GIG file size though the disks are capable of 4.5 storage. Consequently I suggest setting your Winrar file size to 1.5 gig and putting 3 files per CD. If doing it from Windows or from backup2ws. Another facility of Winrar lets you allow a % for error correction in case of a bad sector. I would suggest allowing 1% in case you should ever get a bad sector. I've not had this happen with CD's but did have the problem with floppies in the old days. The big advantage of using zip or rar is that your files retain the same attibutes when restored where as if you do a direct copy to CD they all become read only.

Hello Brad, if all fails, check dungog backup:
* Sat Nov 13 2004 Stephen Noble <support@dungog.net>
- backup a tgz file over ssh to a remote server
- tgz files are limited in size only by the destination space

Thu Jul 29 2004 Stephen Noble <support@dungog.net>
- option to pipe to a windows share backups of >2gb
- ie 60gb backups to windows shares with no file splitting

I have used the pipe option and shifted 6GB+ onto a window box. Still trying to get the grip of tgz over ssh...
cheers
