I am assuming you can ping the SME IP address, if not, you need to configure SME.  If your having trouble pinging by hostname from 2003, try entering a static host (a) record in AD DNS.

thanks,

here is my setup on windows 2003:

in the lan connection properties:

Internet Protocol TCP-IP: Used the ff ip address;
ip: 192.168.0.3 my win 2003
mask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.0.33 my sme ip

used dns add: ip: 192.168.0.33 my sme ip

also in advance setting my dns and wins the is my sme ip, but still i cant ping my sme from windows 2003 but if i ping my windows 2003 from sme i can and i can then ping my sme from windows 2003.

If your Win2003 server is running Active Directory, you must use MS AD DNS.  Active directory can't function without MS AD DNS  (BIND guru's can make BIND work I hear, but thats another discussion).  In this case, your DNS server IP settings will be itself, or if you have multiple AD servers, use a different AD DNS server.

Use SME as your forwarding server for your AD DNS server.  Add a static host (a) record for SME using SME's Lan IP address.  This will allow you to ping it by using the simple host name from any PC using your AD DNS.

When you attempt to ping, are you using the hostname (ie. computer1) or are you using the IP address?  If you are using the IP address and not getting response, you may have a network problem.  I don't think this is the case as you indicate that you can ping the W2K3 box.

If you are using the hostname and it is not working then it implies that the name resolution is not working.  Can you access the internet from your w2k3 box?  Have you tried to ping the Fully qualified name of your SM# box?  IE (sme.domain.name).

IF you are unable to ping the SME by name, add the IP and name to the hosts file located in the C:\WIndows\System32\drivers\etc folder and then try again.
