need help to set up adsl with static IP
« on: November 29, 2004, 01:35:34 AM »
I'm a newbie and I am trying to set up adsl access
Currently the system is in server only mode and every thing works fine
But I want to swap to server/gateway mode for more security
When I try to reconfigure the system all I've done is added an extra nic for external access, which is recognised by e-smith, and give that nic an ip address, and configure the static ip
Then when I try access the server nothing happens.
I can't access the server anymore. I cant ping the local nic at all.
My settings are as follows:
local ip - 192.168.50.13
external ip - 192.168.50.10
subnet for both of above - 255.255.255.0
gateway - 202.45.112.50
What have I forgotten?

External IP should be your public static address
202.45.112.xxx

And you will probably find that the nic that was your internal/only connection is now your external one.

I take it you are with netspace, if they are like other Australian ISP's you don't set your connection up as static, you setup your connection as pppoe, you will get assigned the static IP from the ISP end, it's very straightforward to setup. I have done many ADSL connections with a variety of ISP's and have always used pppoe for static IP connections.

yeah basically its assigned so you shouldn't have to mess with any ext. IP settings, once connected you have that IP.
