I'm trying use Nagios to monitor external web pages.
I have Nagios up and monitoring internal servers and services on SME 6.0.1-01, now I'd like to monitor an exteral web page (a Client's web server).  I would just like to know that www.mydomain.net is up and running.

I know I should problably be posting on Nagios but but SME user know how to get things done.  :)

Thanks,
Rick

Hi Rick,

What is it you actually need help with ?

As long as you can resolve the external servers there shouldn't be any difference.

Hit me if I missed something obvious  :hammer:

Thanks for the reply,
I want to monitor if a page is up or down?
Do I set up a service for port 80?  Or use a url command?  I'm not sure how to set up the config, I don't reply to ping's so that will not work?????

Rick,

It's some time since I did the Nagios thing - I was more involved with it's predecessor :-)

Anyhow, you should be to check for a top-level index.html file (or index.htm if it's windows) as per the nagios docs.

That should prove the website is up.

BTW - I've just had a look at the current nagios documentation and it's appalling. Based on the website, I can't see why you chose it. It used to be a be an excellent tool for service monitoring - we replaced Big Brother with Nagios at one site when BB went commercial. I can't say now that we'd do the same based on a look at the website.
I'm going to have a word with  Mr Galstad.

Now you see why I posted.   :-o
I'm looking for a very simple network monitoring tool. I've played with OpenNMS and MRTG but I just wanted something simple.  I came across Nagios and a how to on this forum so I thought I'd try it.  Do you have any other suggestions, I've read a little about Big Sister any thoughts?

Thanks
Rick

Rick,

I'd probably stay with nagios as it is probably the best around if you don't want to pay for commercial tools.
There used to be a simple setup guide which worked. I'll have a dig around for some examples which might get you going. That's assuming I've still got them buried somewhere (kind of what the documentation pages should be for :-)

I'm hoping that Ethan might register and answer this one.

BTW -

Big sister looked very promising as a clone of Big Brother but was quite crude when I looked at it last.
18 months have gone by since then and it may not be the same. It's still a big-old-boy to configure though.

Any other users have opinions ?
