cannot access shares
« on: December 06, 2004, 11:39:23 AM »
Hi out there
I am some sort of newbi to sme servers but have just installed one and try to get access to ibays via ftp.
I have created a public ibay named "shares" whereto I have added a group to which I belong. But - when I try to access the files folder below that share I get permissioned denied - even though my username & password is correctly. How do I access this share via ftp?? - its a bit weird to me how I address that because if I log on as my own useraccount I of course get my local user share shown. I must have missed something here - please help me back on track
regards Tiwang

Things to check:

1. Have you activated FTP access in the server-manager Remote access panel?

2. Have you given the group 'write' authorization in the server-manager Information bays panel?

hi again
ftp-access-> yes
write auth in servermgr infobays->yes

but - how do I address a share via ftp to which I haven't a user-account ?? when I log on via FTP I get that users home-directory (or "ftp mapped-directory") - if I had enabled anom. ftp I would get that directory - what can I log on as to get this directory f.ex named "shares" - to which the group "members" (to which my own account belongs) has full access - with password - from the local & internet??

By default sme does not work the way you are expecting or hoping.

ibay access rights are controlled by group membership ONLY for local access (LAN or VPN) but NOT for Internet web access.

You can have anonymous acess to ibays via web access.
If you want to protect ibays then password protect them for www or ftp access, in that case you logon  with the username = ibayname and the password is the password that is set for the ibay if you enable password protection of the ibay.

Keep in mind that ftp is not secure and passes plain text passwords over the Internet, easily hacked.

If you want to control remote access to ibays according to usernames and group membership, then only enable local web access for the ibay, and get your users to establish a VPN connection to the server and then map drives to the ibay they are allowed to access.

sorry - of course - somehow my brain has gone idle..
so - now it works - shares via smb and public via ftp
I am a little worried about the note in servermanager - public accessibly via web or anonym ftp - without password - just to be sure - how shall I inteprete this - will this let my "webserver" be opened also for anonymous ftp-access or will this only allow normal webbrowsing from the internet ?? As far as I can se I haven't got the possibilty to specify a anonymous ftp directory ?? The only thing I can is on the remote access page to specify ftp access as "allow public access from entire internet" - and accept passwords from anywhere - will this let my server be opened for anonymous ftp also or do a user need a real account - and the password for it?
