Recommended Free Hylafax Client?

I've done a basic install of Hylafax using  http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk script.

And appear to be able to receive a fax. It does like to default to a Class 1 modem but I am going to probably try removing the setup file and re-running faxaddmodem as I did pick up a Courier external Vanything modem off Ebay which should do operate under class 2 which I am guessing is the later and greater?

A few fax clients are mentioned at his site but some like Relayfax appear not to be free, correct?

WHFC Windows Hylafax Client is GPL so I am attempting to set it up on a XP system.

Client available at
http://www.uli-eckhardt.de/whfc/index.shtml

1) One runs the basic install script and runs regmon in the WHFC directory to make sure the dll installed the port monitor.
1a)then in the WHFC system settings sets the local IP of the SME server. Also a path to Ghostscript and to a viewer which I have on XP. I am going to try GSView which is at the same site as Ghostscript. Though I also already installed PDFcreator to my XPsystem which also downloads Ghostscript as part of it.

2)It may be necessary to go into Windows XP Control Panel and remove the Windows Fax Client ( I may try re-adding later to see if this was really necessary)

3) A login message pops up but does not accept your password - strange but a search using google found that on NT4 this is because the SME server /var/spool/hylafax/etc/hosts.hfaxd file needs the ip of the client machine, it also appears to be true with XP.

see http://www.hylafax.org/HylaFAQ/Q225.html

Entering the ip allowed the WHFC Client to connect. Until then I couldn't and though it was because of using port 4559 but as this is local and not external it is not the problem. I entered the local ip 192.168.0.3 of the XP computer in the SME server hosts file mentioned above and immediately the fax client connected. I thought perhaps I could enter a range such as 192.168.0.3-192.168.0.254 but this didn't work. So it does appear it necessary to enter the ip's of all clients

I tried sending a fax but have not yet figured how the phone number is to be added and the fax doesn't seem to go anywhere.

At this point it is past 1:00 am so I thought I would see if anyone is successfully using the GPL Windows Hylafax

Thanks, Ken

Relayfax client is free - and the best I have tried. I can supply working procmail scripts if needed.

I use whfc on my xp machine with no problems.

have you typed "faxadduser" on the server this command adds user details to the /var/spool/hylafax/etc/hosts.hfaxd
(easier then adding the ips)

faxadduser -p newuserpasswordhere newusername

as for sending a fax you have to have whfc running and the print anything you like to the fax printer that should have been setup when you installed whfc, at this point you get a dialogue box asking for the number to send it to, you can also setup an address book.

I had not used faxadduser as per your suggestion and once I did the dialogue box asking for the number to send to came up on the XP computer where as just entering the ip address as I had was not sufficient - I removed the ip address from the file and the entry done as you mentioned still worked. Also I notice the password is encrypted when it ends up in the config file.

Thanks. :-)

Still have to figure out how to add coverpages etc.

Had you tried Relayfax or SMB fax or was it a matter of this was the 1st you got working so never needed to try others?

I have PHProjekt on the work computer as well and its also supposed to be able to be set up to Fax from so I expect to try a couple or more things before I am done.

Thanks again.
Ken

I think the client you use will depend heavily upon personal preference, play with them all and see which one suits you best.

Personally, I use WHFC, because it can link into my mySQL database which is where I store our customers Address, Phone, Fax & Email details..

Being able to choose the recipient from a list is really good, it is a bit finnicky about connecting to SQL though, play at your own risk :)

SalsaFax is by far the most flexible I've found - I don't like fax clients! This just install as a Postscript printer, you print to the printer & somewhere in the document (usually the cover sheet) include the magic string Fax No: & SalsaFax extracts the number that follows & sends the fax.

One of my clients sends 10's of faxes a day like this & it works great.

I got WHFC working this morning once I had added the users as per previous post. I eventually want to see if Fax can work with PHproject and as its a mysql database this could be useful.

However the Fax Cover page did not work WHFC caused errors and prevented the fax from sending if I turn it on. (solution was in system setup to select version 4 instead of 4.1 for coversheet preferences)

Also my system defaulted to class 1 modem and that was causing faxes to be missing lines. Getting the server to recognize the modem as class 2.0 fixed that, I think you have to specify 2.0 in the setup and not just 2

If anyone has a blank coverpage for WHFC without the advertising on it. I wouldn't mind trying it at k_graham@hotmail.com

Another question though, a few seem to use smb fax - has anyone a simplified install instructions for with sme server. ie - what worked?

Thanks,
Ken
