How did you installed your software raid? Are your two hdd's on separate IDE controlers?

Yes they are definitely on different channels

The slowness didn't start out straight away the server has been up for a month now and is fast getting worse & worse.

There are heaps of emails also that i have been notified about just this last day that are "put into problems directory" and it takes ages to open the antivirus panel to do anything with them!

root 6377 6370 5 Dec09 ? 00:07:29 /usr/bin/clamscan --remove --recursive --infected --

Doesn't that look like your (normally nightly) clamAV batch scan job "clamscan" is running?

Have you installed sysmon (System monitor) which might give you some more ideas about the load and resource usage?

Regards,
Michael

Thanks for that, I am running it manually now.

Any other clues as to why the system is running so slow?

It's busy !

Try
top -i
to show just the processes that are actually running at the moment, that will give a clue as to what your server is doing (and perhaps why it is going slow).

6 processes running  :-?
and also 4 zombie processes  :-( . Something wrong there.

Look better like that :
11:40pm  up 79 days,  3:49,  1 user,  load average: 0,16, 0,09, 0,02
132 processes: 131 sleeping, 1 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped
CPU states:  0,7% user,  1,1% system,  0,0% nice, 98,0% idle

1 process running : top  :hammer:

Each of these:

qmaild 11593 2062 0 02:22 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/smtpfront-qmail

entries is the ps output is an email being processed by qmail.  You are being flooded with email.  My SME also goes bonkers when there are floods of undeliverable email.  I never found a solution other than (in my own case) not accepting email from the domain that was receiving it.

I agree that you're being flooded with mail so what to do?

a) change the number of threads that the server runs for smtpfront-qmail so that it the load is more controllable and the system doesn't consume as much of its ram:

/sbin/e-smith/db configuration setprop qmail ConcurrencyRemote 10
/sbin/e-smith/db configuration setprop qmail ConcurrencyLocal 10
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event email-update
/etc/init.d/qmail restart

b) install Ray Mitchells/Charlie Bradys mailfront contrib to reject dodgy email before it even gets to your virus/spam scanners; the system then has less to process and consumes less memory.
