Network installs?

How do I do a network install?

The machine has a floppy drive, SCSI HDDs and 3com network card. Adding a CDROM just for install is not possible as I don't have a SCSI CDROM drive and the machine has no IDE bus.

The docs talk about making a boot floppy, but assumes that the machine still has a CDROM.

TIA.

Hi,

Try a search on this site. There must be about 2 or 3 discussions AND solutions (how-to) for this situation.

Here is a link to a doc that I wrote:

This is what is working for me.

I've followed the instructions and even tweaked the KS.CFG files myself so it prompts for certain things (software RAID etc.)

Anyways, everything goes fine and the installation of packages even appears to start and go along fine. Until the following error pops up:

"The file /mnt/sysimage/var/tmpcompat-libstdc++-6.2-2.9.0.16.i386.rpm cannot be opened. This is due to a missing file, bad package, or bad media. Press <return> to try again."

I've copied this EXACTLY how it comes up on the screen. Note the possible missing '/' after the 'tmp' in the file path.

Pressing return simply keeps causing the error to come up - the whole process is therefore stuck and can't continue.

I've re-copied the files from the CD to the local HTTP server, especially that RPM from a different cut of the installation CD. I know though that all (2) installation CDs I have are fine as I've done normal CD boot installs with them on different newer hardware machines just previous to this network install attempt.

Can you please help?

I don't really know what to tell you.  I looked in the RPM's directory and I have that file without the tmp in front.  I don't know where that is coming from.  I have used the network install with software raid.  I just created a section for it on my boot disk, but call mirror.cfg.  I used the mirror.cfg that is on the ISO.  I have never had a problem.

Just for grins, modify your boot disk and use the mirror.cfg file and see if that works for you.

Good Luck,
