I'm presently running SME 5.6 on a toshiba SG-10 with two 20gig hitachi HDDs.  Both are on the same IDE channel, one master one slave.  Did the upgrade to 6.0 and installed clamA/V and spam assassin, and the poor 350mhz processor chokes... too much of a good thing.

I'm about to upgrade to a faster PC, an emachines 2Ghz.  I have two identical maxtor 40gig drives on one IDE channel just as in the existing server mentioned above.

Install of SME5.6 takes about 8.5 minutes to install all the RPMs on the Emachines PC with one maxtor drive.  When I add a second maxtor drive to the mix, RPM copy time takes about 8 or 9 _hours_.  

I have tried master/slave and cable select on the drives.  I have not tried to split them up to the other IDE controller because the CD rom is on that one.

Has anyone heard of such problems?  Is this a maxtor related issue?

You MUST use both cahnnels instead of one, you can have the CD drive together with a harddrive without problems.

Not meaning to be stubborn or contradictory, but my existing SME installation works with two hitachi drives on one IDE channel.  I'll have to try this when I get home from work today though... it may be the solution.

It is always best to use one IDE channel for each harddrive set to master. It gives the best performance and a system that still runs if one controller goes down. I have seen before a system being slow to install in RAID conf, but it was running just fine after the install. (And still runs...)

then disconnect that cd-rom because you don't need it after installing.  My home server has a nice smooth blank on every bay ... no optical or floppy (yeah, I know, what about the boot floppy but I'll pull it if it falls over anyhow).

Tonight, I got a minute and moved my drives from all on one IDE channel, to each HDD a master on each channel.  I put the CD ROM drive temporarily on the 2nd IDE channel as slave.  

SME5.6 won't load this way at all... just at the moment it should begin installation of RPMs, it bails out..

But SME6.0 will load this way and seems to be on track to load in about 10 minutes... GREAT!!  

But this leads me headlong into my next question... how can I transfer my existing email and folders from my current server 5.6 to 6.0 on the new box?  I tried the other day to simply RSYNC from one 5.6 box to another 5.6 box... the email INBOX came in fine, but none of the folders with mail in them moved.  I RSYNC'ed from /home/e-smith/files to /home/e-smith/files ... do I need to back up one tier?  /home/e-smith ?

Is it not possible to ugrade the 5.6 to 6.0. Then you do a backup to desktop in the server manager and restore to the new server.
If not possible, then backup from 5.6 and restore to 6.0. Then you have to move the contents of the old Primary folder to the "new" Primary folder, since it has a different location on 6.0. (As far as i remember).
