SME keeps restarting
« on: December 18, 2004, 02:12:21 AM »
Okay i now have a problem wich will realy boggle your minds. I had a working SME 6.0.1-01 server with a amd 1600+ cpu. I got a new mobo with a C3 cpu on it so i switch the mobo's and installed the hardware. Now my server keeps starting up. I have checked the bios and it is okay. Cann't do any checking on sme because of the problem. I runs the startscreen and when it loads lilo it restarts.

This problem is realy bugging me because i cann't switch back the old cpu is fright

If anyone can help please because its a webserver with some customers website's on it.

Let me just clarify:

You changed:
- Motherboard
- CPU
-Left harddrive as is

Since the hardware you replaced the old stuff with is different, then i could imagine this could cause some problems.

When replacing hardware its best to stick with the same stuff, ie. intel for intel, amd for amd.

I would recommend you put back in the old hardware if possible and backup if you havn't already done so.

Then, you may either have to reinstall SME with the new hardware installed, or buy new AMD replacement hardware.

Cheers,
Tristan

I also would not expect an Operating system to work after those significant hardware changes.

You might have a good chance to get it going again when you reboot from the SME 6.01 installation CD. It should detect the existing installation and offer an "upgrade". Go through the upgrade which will find no RPMs to update but it will go through hardware detection and post upgrade steps which (I believe) will get it going again.
You have to do that at your own risk but there is a very good chance I would say.

Thanks for your reply guys. I did the upgrade but no go so i think i will refit the old hardware and get a replacment cpu for the old burnt one. Hope this will fix it because clients are already on my throught that there website's are offline. After that i will reinstall a new server with the new hardware and install a new version of sme on that. Heh wish me luck that it will work.
