network problem

Hi,

I just upgraded to SME Server but it I do not get any internet access.

If I assign the ISP's gateway address to my laptop and plug it into the SME Server's port, it can ping fine, but when I plug it into the ISP's network, ping gets no response at all.

If I assing my the SME Server's IP address to my laptop and plug it into the ISP's network, I can ping the ISP's gateway fine.

Any idea what the problem could be?

Max.

The DNS servers were manually set - I didn't see where to manually set them in the SME Server config process, but I don't see that this is the problem since when I ping I use the ip address of the gateway.

I am testing from the command line, using ping. When I test using 'test internet connection' in the management tool (after logging in as 'admin'), it reports a failure. Is that what you mean?

PS. I did notice that my laptop autonegotiates different port settings to those on the Server, so I used ethtool to set them manually (and editted the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts script to set them at boot). It didn't make any difference though.

When I set up my laptop as if it were my ISP's gateway, I cannot ping SME, but SME can ping me.

I've not seen this behaviour before. Is this normal?

I reinstalled FC2 and it seems to work fine - pings work in both directions w/o problem.

Any ideas? I'd really like to move from FC2 to SME, but w/o network access, I can't really.

PS. h/w is Compaq ProLiant 370ML (1st generation). it used to run RedHat 7.x w/o any problem.
PPS. fc2 says :
e100:Intel(R) Pro/100 Network Driver, 3.0.17 addr: 0xcbefb000 irq:5
I guess I could check this same thing in SME?

well, I'll be....

After putting fc2 on it to find out the type of NIC, I reinstalled SME again, and it worked first time.

The only thing I did differently was to NOT specify a server for the local DNS. The first time, I had specified an ISP's DNS server there, since that is what I thought it was asking for; I had subsequently deleted that from the server administrator, but perhaps doing so didn't completely reverse the error?

Anyone care to give an option?

In any case; I'm sorry for the interruption, and I'm happy that it is now working, and to be able to move forward to setting it up as a file server etc etc.
