short read... now data recover help...

I have an SME box that is not regularly monitored because of its location. In october for some reason it stopped syncing the drives configured with software raid. There was recently an error that required a reboot. Upon doing so, it was discovered that hda was not accessible.  I pulled it out and rebooted from hdc (the mirror). hdc did not have any data from the last two months. Ouch. After a lot trial and error, I got the system running and tried to fsck the bad drive. Short Read errors were everywhere, but with some work I got it mounted as ro and started coping some vital data off it. A tech friend took the drive home to try and recover the rest but ended up quick formatting drive in windows thinking the we pulled everything off we needed. Nothing else has been written to this drive, so much of the data should be there. The partition map is blown, but I have a mirror of that (matched drive). I am looking for some guidance and where to look for tips on how to recover as much of the data from the last two months as possible. How to rebuild the partition map. Once this is done will the mounted partitions show the data. A data recovery service is an option, but the $1,200 price tag is a little more than we can do. Are we screwed? or can this be recovered? Then I need to go through the logs and figure out what happened.
