911 Backup Problems (SME 6.01-1)
« on: January 08, 2005, 01:53:35 AM »
I am having troubles with my 911 backup job.  It seems to begun after trying to create a full backup using the suggested paths ( /bin,/boot,/dev,/etc,/home,/initrd,/lib,/opt,/quota.group,/quota.user,/root,/sbin,/service,/usr,/var ).  After 48 hours and 60 rar files later and the job still running (for 30 GB HDD) I decided to kill the rar process.

Now every time I try to do a 911 backup all I get is the following in the messages log immediately after submitting job:
Jan  8 11:28:46 apu e-smith[1968]: Processing event: post-backup
Jan  8 11:28:46 apu e-smith[1968]: Running event handler: /etc/e-smith/events/post-backup/S10mysql-delete-dumped-tables

Jan  8 11:28:46 apu e-smith[1968]: Running event handler: /etc/e-smith/events/post-backup/S50rewind-tape
Jan  8 11:28:47 apu e-smith[1968]: /dev/st0: No such device

Jan  8 11:28:47 apu e-smith-bg: Error occured during post-backup event at /sbin/e-smith/backup2ws-backup line 57.

All other backup jobs still work ok, only the 911 job is affected. I have tried deleting it and recreating numerous times to no avail.

Am trying to migrate to a new server so want to get an up to date backup of my existing system to restore to the new server.  Any help would be greatly aprreciated.

Thanks
Marcus

That's more than the standard 911 backup job has in it. I think the /dev path is your big problem.

I have
/home,/etc/e-smith/templates-custom,/etc/e-smith/templates-user-custom,/etc/group,/etc/gshadow,/etc/passwd,/etc/shadow,/etc/smbpasswd,/etc/ssh,/opt,/root
I also added
/etc/lilo.conf,/var/log,/etc/motd

You only need the above data to restore to a freshly installed sme server.

Thanks Ray,

I'll try it with the paths you suggested.  The paths that I put in my orignal post is what it suggests in backup2ws for a full system backup.

Using the above 911 backup (which I believe are the original paths suggested by Darrel May), you will still have to reinstall any contribs that you added after the initial server install.

If you want to transfer your whole server hard disk contents to another machine, why not clone from old the drive to the new drive and increase the disk partition sizes to suit the new drive, and if required run the sme OS update from CD.
Doing it this way will be a whole lot easier than backing up and restoring, and the end result will be the same anyway.

That idea had entered my mind, but I dont know how!! Very much a Linux/SME novice.  I thought there would be problems with drivers etc etc.  Is there a How To floating around, I assume you use something like ghost?

Also I am using mirrored disks, does this complicate the process?

sme will identify your new hardware (assuming is supported), best to check that first.
If you have different cards etc (eg NIC) just run the Configuration again on the new server and select the correct type.
You may have problems going from AMD to Intel, but from Intel to AMD should be OK (thanks Charlie for that confirmation).

I have seen some howtos here using Mondo & other ways. Do a search.
I use Norton Ghost 2003 and it works OK, just connect both drives and boot from the Ghost floppy, select the source and the destination and go.

If you have a boot problem this may be useful.

Not had the opportunity to clone mirrored drives, I guess it would work. Anyone else know for sure ?
Theoretically you only need to clone one drive and then rebuild the array, see howtos & rpms here:
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/index.php?subdir=dmay%2Fsmeserver%2F5.x%2Fcontrib%2Fraidmonitor&sortby=name

Just swapped a working drive from a RAID array to use as a backup and the rebuild worked nicely.

Thanks for all the advice Ray, have definitely had enough of the backup-restore path.  Have spent all day with no progress at all.  Will give ghosting a go tomorrow....g4u seems to be another option that has pretty positive reviews.

It works OK on v6.0 so should be OK with 6.0.1.

g4u is a cool tool, but my attempt to clone a 2 * 18 GB Scsi Raid 1 at a Mylex DAC 960 to a more normal 40 GB EIDE Disk failed. g4u copied and the copy had fatal errors in the partition tables.

But: g4u is much better than the others (Ghost, Acronis etc.) that did not event recognize the SCSI Raid at the Mylex. I will NEVER use exotic HW again ARGGH  :-(
