I have installed and configured e-smith 4.1.2 as a file server, proxy server and mail server and all is OK. I now want to point the www host to my ISP, how can I find there IP address? Or is there a better way to do it. This is my final hurdle to overcome in e-smith, please help.

Do you mean to point the www for your internal users to your ISP website outside your local network? If so ... that's easy, Just go to the hostname section and click on Modify beside your "www" host and point it to the specific Public IP. If your website located at your ISP is something like..."www.myisp.net/~johndow" you can put that in your "www" host and that will forward your internal users to that address.

If this is not what your looking for , please clarify!

I have tried to enter that but I get this message:
Error: unexpected characters in host name: "http://home.btclick.com/telecomred". The host name should contain only letters, numbers, hyphens and periods and must start with a letter or a number.
I have also tried without the http:// , I have tried using www.telecomred.fsnet.co.uk(another freespace I use). I hope this helps you help me.

Derek, you are confusing me.


Why do you need their address ?

You want to have YOUR fixed IP adress !!

Do you have a fixed IP address from your ISP, that's the question. Then you ask your ISP to publish change their DNS server to include your fixed IP address that points to www.datacomred.com..

That is what I think you are trying to do, so that you can serve stuff from your own box to the net, correct ?

If I'm totally wrong, than explain again what you try to do.

I can see http://home.btclick.com/telecomred which seems to be linked to www.datacomred.com (or you put the same info on both sites..)

The info on this site is normally visible, there are only a few pages.

Hi Kees,
It was you who got me into all this e-smith stuff!
Let me start from the begining, my domain name datacomred.com is hosted by uk2net, they have a facility where by you go onto their site and log into your domain you can then divert your name to any web space ie home.btclick.com and your email to any pop3 address ( I use tiscali). all emails go to 1 pop3 address ie derekholyhead@tiscali.co.uk, my e-smith box dials up, logs on, downloads all my emai and distributes it to the necessary users, all OK no problems. When I type www.datacomred.com into explorer I get the welcome to xyz company page, I would prefer to see the page that everyone on the internet sees which is:http://home.btclick.com Maybe I can't do this without a permanent connection to the internet, in which case can I delete the www host altogether?

Hi Del,

You could try this.

On a pc with a standard modem dial up, dial into your ISP. Verify you can go to your web site by using your browser.

Now, open a command prompt (or DOS prompt).
Ping your web address (ie.  home.btclick.com)
You should get an IP address back for home.btclick.com.

In e-smith-manager, go to hostnames and modify the www entry.
Enter the IP address you got from the ping test into the www entry.

Save and try if your LAN users can get to your web site now.

By the way this has come up many times before. Like many before you, we all wish we could simply delete the www entry but this cannot be done. I use the method above for my setups.
