It's Custom ISO testing Time Again
« on: January 13, 2005, 03:47:35 PM »
I have created a custom ISO using the 2.4.28 Kernel and have also included several contribs in the install process.  I need feedback on any and all bugs as well as any suggestions for contribs to add into it.  This ISO is considered BETA and was more to make the 2.4.28 kernel work with the existing software.

I have re-rolled the ppp & ppp-modules rpms for 2.4.28, but need to know if there are any other rpms that must be updated for this new kernel.

Here is the link:

TIA

Is this Kernel any better at recognizing the SATA drives than the standard 6.0.1

Thanks,

It should be, I did build in whatever SATA that is supported by the stock kernel source.  If you have a chance to test it out, please let me know.  I do not have access to anything with SATA at the moment, so I am relying on others to test it....

Hello cc_skavenger,

I'll give it a go as well .. I have a test machine to try it out on.

Any chance to get the ISO put onto a mirror for faster downloads?

Regards,

Tib

I am open to anyone who wants to host it.  I just doubled the speed that I had my web server bandwidth limited to....  Hope this makes it a little better.

Hello cc_skavenger

Thanks it must of helped as it's finnished downloading now.

I will commence loading on test server soon ... do you know of any addons so to speak that will not run with this version ... eg twiggi, twig, egroupware etc.

I guess I will test all those out as well ... problem solving is something I cannot help with though, I have no programing experience nor do I know too much about the guts of linux.

But for testing out the funtionality of most addons I can try and help with.

Regards,

Tib

You beauty... Been waiting for a SATA based distribution for some time.

Just finished building a SATA based (raided 200GB WD SATA disks, Supermicro, P4 in a 1RU case) SME server and it is looking just fine. So far no problems. Install time under 4 minutes, has rebooted etc and 'is good'. Only hassle was the network support on this mainboard wasn't recognised.

Will post again after it has been hammered a bit. Will check the network issue as well.

Network issue - selected E1000 (last on the select list) and now on the network.

Now to hammer it... One happy user, thanks for this version.

Kevin,
What type of SATA controller are you using?  Just to know what works   :-D
What network chipset was not recognised but worked with the E1000 driver?

Sorry for all the questions, but this info will be of help for others.

Tib,
As for what software works, there is very little difference between this custom version and the official version from contribs.org.  I added the updates that I always have to do (openssh, openssl, rsync, proftpd, initscripts, and a few others).  I did not update php, apache, imp or horde, or any major item.  I had to recreate the ppp and ppp-module rpms for 2.4.28, but I did not update the versions yet.  I was just trying to update the kernel so we had the benefits of this newer kernel.  I will continue to work on updating this custom iso by adding the updates from the update script one at a time and working on what breaks.  I am new to this, but I will give it my best.

I hope this is a benefit for anyone who wants to use "newer" hardware and reap the benefits.

I would really appreciate any and all feedback on success or problems encountered so that I can try to make adjustments.  All of us will benefit from the knowledge and this will keep keep things moving forward so that this distro doesn't die.

Thanks everyone.

Thanks for the link BoZz..

FWIW,
I am uploading a new version, sme-server-6.0.1-03RC3.
I have added almost everything from the update script floating around this board.  I am having trouble with PHP, but hope to have this resolved soon.

Here is a link to the README:

Hi

It is a supermicro P4SCE board in a 5013C-T 1RU chassis.
http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/P4/E7210/P4SCE.cfm

Running with a P4 3.2Ghz, 2xWD 200GB SATA and 2GB ram - runs quite well :-}

From the supermicro website:
Dual IntelĀ® 82541 Gigabit Ethernet Controllers
SATA Controller on-chip (IntelĀ® ICH5R)

Am copying down your RC3 spin so I can try that one.

Regards
Kevin

kevin,

Can you do a hdparm -Tt /dev/whatever your hard drive is

and show what you got. Curious what the throughput of the hard drives are...

Thanks
