Error when dialing

I am receiving an error, something about the line being too noisy and it can't connect. Also which text editor is installed to apply the necessary changes in the conf files???

If you can tell us exactly what error you see where, and in what circumstances, then we might be able to help identify the problem.

There are at least three text editors you can use; ed, vi and pico. If you intend to change config files, be sure to read the documentation on www.e-smith.org. In most cases you should edit config file templates rather than the config files themselves.

I have cleared up the problem.

1. Started up Mandrake and telnet into E-smith Box
2. Used the PPP HOWTO and the emacs editor to setup the box.
3. The "noauth" line in the /etc/ppp/options file cleared the problem.

Next Question.

Can I use E-smith to run a ISP Server box??
Why? Because I like your config utility.

Thanks Again,

That sounds like you were using the e-smith 4 preview rather than the
released 3.1 version. Please be aware that the preview is incomplete and lhas had very little testing.

You don't say what you did to "setup the box" - but any changes you made may be lost when you update any configuration information using the e-smith admin interface.

It doesn't support ISP server features as is, but the e-smith architecture is extensible. See the documentation on www.e-smith.org - and have fun!

Here is your error message it has returned????
"s10:Transmit timed out, bad line quality"

I'm going to change down to 3.1 and see if the error goes away.

I get this message also, it seems to be that diald is unaware that the modem has gone on-hook. While we are in this state we most often fail to connect back to the Internet. In the beginning we used to reboot the e-smith server, now we have found that sending diald a SIGINT (2) clears the problem. Haven't really spent any time looking into this, less annoying now than before (We have a web page on the e-smith server that allow anyone to send that signal to diald).

Could this be a misconfiguring of the modem? Thinking that diald (or ppp or whatever) is expecting to see a given hardware line following the state of the on/off hook wheras the modem is configured to keep the same line at the same state all the time?  This is pure speculation from me at this point, haven't even looked in the manuals for modems, but just wanted to see if anyone with less rusty skills would jump in with some insight.
