kde desktop for sme 6
« on: January 14, 2005, 12:37:47 PM »
As I am new to linux I am looking for a gui for my server to make it a bit easier to navigate/use. I have been told that "kde desktop" is good, and would like to download it, but find that the downloads are specific to different versions of linux. I've looked for a version for redhat 7, which, I believe, sme6 is based on but haven't been able to find one. Can anyone supply a link to download it.

Hello burnside,

Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of the SME server ... keep the size down to a minimum. If you want KDE just install redhat, suse, mandrake or a debian package and go for it.

The web interface couldn't be any more simpler on SME ... it's more difficult rumaging through all the windows in KDE looking for all the setup stuff.

Anyway each to there own.

Regards,

Tib

The web interface is great, but I would like to know what's happening outside of the i-bays, with mysql, php etc. I don't know how to find this information through the command line and the web interface doesn't give you access to this info.

You should take the time to learn on a machine that is not critical to anybody. At your stage, trying to put X on SME would probably mess things up. Besides, it truly does defeat the purpose of SME.

Get a spare box, load Fedora Core (or another distro of your choice) and spend the time learning about Linux where making a mistake won't hurt anything.

Install phpmyadmin from
[url
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/index.php?subdir=dmay%2Fsmeserver%2F5.x%2Fcontrib%2Fphpmyadmin&sortby=name[/url]

Another useful one is the qmHandle rpm for managing the email queue.

There are quite a lot of add on contribs available that add panels to the server manager. Search through the contribs area.
Other than the contribs that are already available, it sounds like it's time to start learning how to use the command line. Look up one of the many Linux tutorial/commands web sites.

Searching these forums for the topic of interest is a good start, and then posting questions here eg how can I .......... etc etc.
There are a wealth of tips available in these forums re how to extract config info from your server etc etc.

This was addressed many, many times on the forums when they were hosted by Mitel; the consensus among Mitel engineers was "it's a Very Bad idea and will break stuff."

If you want a server with a GUI, why not try any major distribution such as Mandrake or Red Hat's Fedora Core and set it up as a server?  There are many options for doing so and you can have your pick of administration tools.

Of course, the resulting server won't be nearly as simple to administer as SME, but you pays your money (in this case, zero) and you takes your choice.
