Please report contribs compatibility issues to the author of the specific contrib directly, and do not log them on contribs.org bugtracker.

( again, a BETA is a BETA and NOT intended for production use! ) Everything you do is at your own risk!

Thank you.

RequestedDeletion,

Can you make this post and others related to SME Server 6.5 Beta1 (like this one http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=25673.0) "STICKY"?

Alternatively you could setup a new forum dedicated to SME Server 6.5 and move these posts to there.

Cheers,

I installed the beta version (i386) in Microsoft virtual pc 2004

Installation went smooth but couldn't ever get the Console to display, but was able to acess the server-manager. It probably didn't display due to lack of ram, but I'll find out tomorrow.

I would have liked to install it on a box at work but I ran out of time today. Will let you know what happens when I install it at work on a PC and on a system with more ram and microsoft virtual pc.

Glad to see a new version!

Hello all,

Well I've had an interesting load with the new 6.5 ver.

I decided to do an update to a 6.0.1-01 install wich had the smeupdate script run on it as well as a couple of other addons like egroupware, phpmyadmin, twig not (twiggi) ... twiggi is part of the smeupdate script, openvpn and phpldapadmin are a few I can think off.

this server is in server only mode atm.

The update went well except for good old mysql ... it broke ... with a little stuffing arround and updates I got it going again.

First I updated mysql to 4.0 ... it ran like a dream again ... then i got greedy and decided to update it to 4.1 with smeghead's update script and I broke it again.

But again with a little stuffing around I got it to run ... not fixed properly as it won't come online after a re-boot but if I start it manually it's fine ... I think I've butchered it up a bit as I can't start it with "service mysqld start" I have to use "service mysql start".
Ohh and I had password problems ... I set the password manually but how do you get it back to normal ??

I can access all the features I've tried so far like webmail, egroupware, phpmyadmin, phpldapadmin, twiggi and twig ... they seem to be functioning properly ... haven't tested out openvpn yet but it started up with an OK at startup so I would think it's fine.

Anyway enough testing for one night ... I'll check a few more things out tomorrow and the weekend.

Could someone help me get MySQL back on track please.

Regards,

Tib

Ok, 6.5 is running fine on VMware, had initial virtual network problems but the VMnet profile 1 seems to work just fine, after enabling DHCPc on eth0.

I do miss my kernel 2.4.27 though, too bad 6.5 is still running 2.4.20. Giving bluetooth a go now, keep you posted!

Installed last night on VMware.

Like previous version (6.0) which I'm running, installation was a breeze, I think even my mum could probably install it with a bit of easy guidance!

Took about 5 mins for a full install which I was impressed with.

I haven't played around with it much, my SME 6.0 box is still running ok apart from the domain controller isn't working but I didn't fancy a reinstall and backup of 60GB of data.

My initial impression of 6.5 Beta 1 was a positive one, I think my next step would be installing this on a spare box and see how it works as a domain controller etc.

Same problem. And I found in changelog :

It was removed intentionally. Too many Mitel customers were filling in DNS server addresses and having name resolution issues as a result. The inbuilt DNS server should work just fine. It does for me.

The Mysql 4.0.xx upgrade method needed to be tweaked a bit for 6.5beta1.  I started an update scripts page here - http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php/SME6.5UpdateScripts

For a bit more info and any to give any comments about these update scripts please use this thread - http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=25744.0

I recently purchased the dungog suite of software and it worked great on the stable version of sme but the 6.5 beta didn't go so well.

The dungog software was looking for older versions of software that the stable release has, for ex.

1. Stables has perl-libnet-1.17-1
2. The beta has perl-libnet-1.18-1

Dungog requires you to have perl-libnet-1.17-1

I am working on it currently right now, just wanted to let everyone know they might want to hold off upgrading if they use the dungog software. I'll update as soon as I know a workaround.

perl-libnet-1.17 is included in the directory of another contrib for convenience, if 6.5 has a later version just delete the 1.17 version (don't try to install it).

we encourage the use of 6.5
just remember it's a first release beta

if you find a dungog related incompatability before we do pleae let us know

Here is the exact text from SME

[root@sme av]# rpm -Uvh clamav/*.rpm
Preparing...                ########################################### [100%]
package perl-MailTools-1.61-1 (which is newer than perl-MailTools-1.60-0.rh73.dag) is already installed
package perl-libnet-1.18-1 (which is newer than perl-libnet-1.17-1) is already installed

I removed both the packages from the clamav dir that it said were already installed.

So far it's been working great.

The code to forward to a different DNS server is
still there, just do the following:

/sbin/e-smith/config setprop dnscache Forwarder <dns server>
/etc/e-smith/events/actions/dnscache-conf

To remove it do the following:

/sbin/e-smith/config delprop dnscache Forwarder
/etc/e-smith/events/actions/dnscache-conf

Just to report my first reactions to the new 6.5b...

Ilove it.  Great work.  I like the plan outlined by the leaders...stable and measured is good.

The only problem I ran into that was a bit unexpected is that the installation did not recognize the builtin NIC on a new Intel 915-chipset mainboard, nor did it recognize a D-Link DGE-530T GbE NIC.

Supposedly, the DGE-530T uses the sk98lin driver, which is included, but it doesn't seem to work even if loaded manually.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to getting newer Intel NICs or the D-Link DGE-530T NICs working?

Suggestions as to any GbE NIC that works well with SME6.5?

Thanks again for the great work,

G

I had 6.5 Beta2 running all weekend on a spare server I had luying around. I was very pleased at the stability of the server and was more than pleased with the performance and memory management.

Also, I honesty can't see a need to add any new contrib to the server as the base + update script loaded everything I could possibly need (well, possibly dungog's virtual domain contrib).

The only problems I had were with SpamAssassin and Backup to Desktop.

SA (from Jesper Knudsen) would load but not run probably. I'm assuming there are some dependencies on 6.0 components that cause incompatibility here. The backup component was downloading files that had zero content (ie blank). However, after registering this as a bug I was notified that it was not re-creatable.

All in all, I am really looking forward to the final release. I'm very impressed with all the hard work that has gone into this release!!

Please if you are going to report bugs do so on a clean system.  The update script loads a lot of packages that mess with much of the functionality of the basic SME setup.

I hope this is the right place to post this,
the howto here http://www.schirrms.net/sme/SMEFetchMail.php
for pop3 retrieval I tried yesterday was made for 6.0.x
didn't work on the 6.5 beta1 release.

after installing the rpm required, I porceded to mail retrieval and then tried to create the account, it would  only display the name of the user, and wouldn't give any other options.

I haven't tried it on the beta2 yet, but when i get a chance i will let you know.

cheers

Hi all,
I've just published a html page with RPM comparison of some different SME version

http://smerp.free.fr/comp_RPM.html

* 6.0.1
* 6.0.1 with yum update
* 6.0.1 with yum update & update from knudsen script
* 6.5 beta 2

In light blue you have the new RPM from one version to the next.
In light green you have the update...
In lignt orange you have the regression
In light red you will find the disparition

In fact, some removed RPM were not in the 6.0.1 version, but only added by the two updates...

It's important to see that some of the 6.5 RPM are really outdated and have some huge security hole...
Then it's the day to update them...

What's a joke ...

Have a look at http://www.fedoralegacy.org.

All rpms included in SME 6.5 are the last versions of the security fix from fedoralegacy. The rpms are built with backport of bugfix from latter versions, when needed. Can you point me in php-4.1.2-7.3.10.legacy.i386.rpm security issues which are not adressed?

If you believe this is true please point out any security issues and holes to security@contribs.org and they will be addressed.

If you are trying to just scare people please get your facts straight before posting.  Just because a package isn't the latest version number doesn't mean it isn't secure.  Redhat/Fedoralegacy backport many of the secruity patches to their versions.

Hi All,

I was testing/updating my ASSP anti-spam howto on 6.5b and ran into a problem right off the bat that someone might be able to help me with.

ASSP is a SMTP proxy. In the past, I modified the /etc/services file (custom template) so that SME listened on port 125 instead of 25. Then installed the proxy to listen on 25. I have lots of SME servers in production with ASSP.

My problem is that (apparently) with 6.5b, simply modifying the /etc/services SMTP entry is no longer sufficient to make the SME server listen on port 125. After rebuilding /etc/services and restarting services (even rebooting), SMTP is still active on port 25...like it completely ignores the /etc/services mod.

Is there, perhaps, a new database entry or something to make this mod?

Thanks for any insight you might provide.

G

p.s.  Sorry for the cross-post.  I posted on the experienced user form with no response.

But now in 6.5, it tells me the CD is corrupted error for both betas. I really want to upgrade to 6.5, Anyone please help!!!!

Has anyone installed spamfilter from Swert-knudsen? I have tried to install the new contrib with SA3 using the new 6.5 beta script found on the site:

Swerts-knudsen--->http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/downloads/SpamFilter/spamfilter_installbeta.sh

It installs OK on my 6.52 test box, but I experience an error each time I try to save a change.  Done it again on a fresh install, same results.
Any clues?

Comment on loginscript rpm:  I stopped using it when 6.0 came out...I wasn't bright enough to modify it for 6.0.  It was a nice contrib for prior versions... :-(

After a lot of testing, I finally came up with a decent general-purpose login script that I use for all my customers.  I modify it a bit for each client, but it works well for both Win 9X and NT/2K/XP clients.  I'll post it if anyone is interested...

I figured out the configuration changes for changing port 25, so I have updated the ASSP spam filter howto and posted it here:

http://www.sonoracomm.com/sonoracomm/pdf/ASSP_HOWTO.pdf

There has been very little testing on 6.5, so please e-mail me with any comments or errors.

SME Server 6.5 beta contribs compatibility issues

The login script works fine with 6.0.1-1 you just have to run a small command to point things in the right dirrection and presto ... I'm running it right now on my michine ... works fine.

I have loaded it on my test 6.5 server ... I will run the command on it and see if it points things in the right dirrection on it tomorrow ... I have to bring the laptop home for testing it.

I'll let you know what happens.

I found the command to run to point thing in the right dirrection on SME 6.0.1-1 etc.

ln -s /home/e-smith/files/samba/netlogon /home/netlogon

Run it after you have loaded the loginscript rpm.

Regards,

Tib

Sorry for taking so long .... the loginscript rpm works fine in SME 6.5B2 ... I didn't have to run the command I posted earlier ... when I checked today it was pointing in the right direction ... but then again I loaded the loginscript rpm a while ago so I may have run the command then.

Just have a look in /home and see if you have a dir called netlogon in there .... if not then run the command I posted earlier.

Anyway it works fine ... I joined the 6.5 server domain and setup a small share and presto it worked as it should.

Regards,

Tib.

Error 800 using VPN on ver6.5beta1
« Reply #39 on: February 19, 2005, 09:10:06 PM »
I tried to vpn to my test server running a fresh install of 6.5beta1.  I never could get past the 800 error.

Using the same setting on my client I can connect to another server running 6.01.

Any ideas of what new settings I need to enter or plug in.

I installed fresh 6.5 and I want to install spam assasin, but swerts-knudsen script works only with 6.0
Is there any working script with 6.5? Thanks.

If you check New Contrib Announcements for February, you'll find a link to Knuddi's latest script for Clamav 0.83 !
. . should be compatible with 6.5 (according to Knuddi).

Editing: Sorry - misread your question - forget the intrusion !
Greetings

If you go back to Jesper's site, and copy the wget line just add beta to the end of the name before .sh.  You should download the beta install.

There is an initial issue with the script for 6.5, so go here to correct that:
