Does SME support Reiser file system?

If so, how can I get the install to default to Reiser?

Thanks.

Reiserfs support is in the kernel and you can add in the reiserfs tools rpm but there is no support during installation.  Since there is no ext2/3 to reiserfs conversion program like ext2 to ext3, the partitions must be created in reiserfs and then the data can be moved / created there.

OK kewl, so if I download your modded ISO, install the OS to the RAID1 drive(s), then I can format the RAID5 drive(s) with teh reiserfs, for webpages, email, and such?

nice!  got any tips for a novice?

Thanks in advance :)

Out of interest, why do you want to use reiserfs? In what way does ext3 not meet your requirements?

As I understand it, Reiser is much more efficient with large numbers of smaller files.  ext3 tends to be very well journalled, but much slower.  I hear good things about xfs as well, but all my *nix friends swear by reiserfs.

No you have any noticable performance problems? Do you have directories containing many thousands of small files?

not yet, but I do anticipate such.

This server is intended to perform some light paid hosting, as well as some family web pages and photo galleries and such.  Knowing my family they'll throw LOTS of pictures at it.

So I expect LOTS of small files.

Since it's a dual PII with only 400 mhz, I'd like to tweak the OS/filesystem as much as possible.

Don't get me wrong, I don't just gotta have reiserfs.  I'm just under the belief that it performs faster than ext3.  Believe me, it's not woth too much effort.  If it's a pain to install, I don't need it that badly.  The idea is a fun project that performs as best as can be had, not creating work just for the sake of creating work.

Anything is worth at least a shot!

Your idea of "small files" must be quite different from mine. Or your family takes very small pictures :-)

I'm quite sure that reiserfs is not worth the effort.

Can't speak for everyone who will be using this thing, but my own pics total about 3000, and growing, roughly 1/2 are under a meg.  Converted for web viewing.  Some are larger for the sake of detail.

But small files are files with only some Bytes and not 500 KB!

I know NetWare servers with directories, which contain > 50.000 files with 10-20 KB each file! In one directory! That's the point!

I don't think, you will create galleries with more than 100 fotos in one directory!?

Many of the benchmarks (that I've seen anyway) say otherwise...reiser3 outperforms nearly all linux fs's (in most areas) except for xfs.  At the cost of a slight CPU hit.

And yes, a gallery with 500+ photos is not at all out of the question.  My father is a professional photographer/graphic artist and needs a site :D

There's nothing at all wrong with ext3 that SME installs with by default.  However, if there are other, possibly more appropriate filesystems that may add an advantage, and are just a command line away, it's worth at least a look.

Can you convert that Netware server to reiserfs or xfs?  I bet reisers' tail packing would really help!

Exactly. It'll have no trouble at all with 500+ photos.

I'm sure there's a reason that RedHat don't support reiserfs in RHEL.
