Assistance With More Advanced File Permissions
« on: April 14, 2005, 04:14:23 AM »
I am trying to implement a SME server but I need to imitate the windows 2000 server permissions that the other location has in place. This includes things like users being able to change a file or the contents of a folder but not delete etc.

I realize this will most likely come down to capabilities of samba. So, I though I'd ask you guys if any of you implement more than the basic file and folder permissions for the ibays that come with sme by default.

Thanks for the help.

Anyone?

I'm currently reading through samba docs and although it's good reading I've got a ways to go. :-D

Hey bkrosco,
here is a link to a forum discussion:
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=25591.msg103502#msg103502
It is the best example I have found to try to explain "cascading" permissions. Also did you check out the contrib for advanced workgroup here:
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/jprice/beta/e-smith-advworkgroup/
it is an old rpm but might be worth checking out.
Hope this helps.

I had seen that thread a while ago. I was really hoping there's a better solutions than cascading permissions. It seems overly complicated. I don't see a novice being able to grasp that situation. I would have to create each share myself.

Anyone else?
