Adding functionality to the SME server....
« on: January 31, 2005, 04:46:07 PM »
I'm an experienced Windows user but total Linux novice. I have got the SME server up and running no problems, and at the moment I simply have it acting in a Raid 1 config as a  NAS for a few users, I plan to expand to it's full designed functionality later (once broadband finally gets to me).

What I want to do is to add a program called mt-daapd (an iTunes server) to the SME server. At the moment I am using a Linksys NSLU-2 Linux NAS to run it,
http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Unslung/Mt-daapd, and all is working fine except that the NSLU is a little too slow for the large MP3 collection I have. As I have a reasonably high spec machine running the SME I'd like to take advantage of it.

So to cut a long story short, can some-one give me a step by step guide how to achieve this? Even if it is just pointers it will help as I'm quite happy to learn as I'm "playing". I have the compressed file (tar.gz) but I havn't got the first clue how to actually install and run it on the SME. (It is also provided in ipk format so on the NSLU I can run an ipkg loader which does all the clever bits for me.)

Thanks Gareth

The place to start is the mt-daapd web site. There is a Redhat 7.3 RPM for version 0.2.0 at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=98211&package_id=105189. This is the RPM you should start with, not the tar.gz source.

Also read the installation and configuration documentation at http://mt-daapd.sourceforge.net/index.php?option=com_docman&Itemid=42&task=view_category&catid=69&order=dmdate_published&ascdesc=DESC

Thanks, I did try to install the rpm but it turned into a seemingly endless chase finding all the missing dependant rpms. So in the end I decided to grab the bull by the horns and install gcc etc and complile the latest nightly build. I did have a fair bit of telephone help from my brother though, who does know what he's doing with Linux :-) and I finally got there and its all working perfectly now. :-)

How about a how-to for the community?  It's a great way to give back and share knowledge.

Well I can certainally try, but it'll have to wait for a while as I really would need to pretty much start agian and follow a process from scratch. It was a huge learning curve for me and I undoubtedly did a load of stuff that I didn't need to do and just as probably did do some stuff I sould not have done :-) I'd hate to nacker some-one elses build with my half (quarter) understood techniques....
